On September 30 it came to the REACH Centre for a demonstration of the ancient sport. Strength, endurance and strategy for an ancient sport Laura Broadley Clinton News Record In a great example of strength and endurance the Bluewater tug-of-war team demonstrated the ancient sport of tug-of-war at the REACH Centre on Sep- tember 30. The ancient sport has two teams pulling a rope at each end in a test of strength in order to pull the opposing team across a marker in the middle. The sport has roots in 500 BC Greece but has slowly gained visibility around the world over the last several decades. For the last 60 years tug-of-war has been popular in Europe but the sport only became prominent in Ontario in the late 1990s, said Matt Metzger, of the Bluewater club. Here is Huron County there is a world-class team of athletes within its borders. The competi- tive Bluewater Tug -of -War Club was founded in 1994 and is located in Dashwood. The team trains together multiple times a week, trains in the gym individually and has been to multiple world champi- onships since its inception. At first glance, two teams pulling on a rope can seem overly simple but strength, endurance and communica- tion are essential characteristics of any team wanting to be successful. Cindy Moyer has seen peo- ple start the sport and go through tremendous physical changes. "It's a full body workout, she said. It's not just for men either, the Bluewater club has been looking to build a women's team. Moyer also said there isn't one particular body type that is more successful and no one has to be incredibly strong. Team- work and strategy are the real requirements for success, which is why emergency ser- vice members can learn a lot There is no "star" of the team and every member of the team is equally important, making it a good alternative to traditional sports for children, said Moyer. Matt Lee, general manager of the REACH Centre, said they're working on making tug-of-war a part of its chil- dren's programs.
