The penny sale took place from September 17 - 26 at St. Paul's Anglican Church, raising about $8,700. The Clinton Public Hospital Auxiliary organizes the penny sale every year to raise funds for the hospital. Some volunteers at the sale on September 25 were, from left to right, Margery Addison (sifting), Ann MacLean, Debra Shipp, Mary Johnstone and Kathy Lobb. CPH Auxiliary continues 61 -year tradition with penny sale Laura Broadley Clinton News Record The Clinton Public Hos- pital Auxiliary held its annual penny sale from September 17 - 26 at St. Paul's Anglican Church. The penny sale is the Auxiliary's biggest fund- raiser each year and draws in hundreds of people. Ann MacLean, organizer of the penny sale and past president of the auxiliary, said they started organizing the event five months ago. She said volunteers started canvassing and collecting donations and continued into the summer months. MacLean said there were many volunteers who helped set up and staff the penny sale during the nine days of ticket sales and the giving of prizes on draw day. The season will run from late September and to the end of April 2016. The game of pickleball is fun, easy to play and the club is open to high school students, seniors and all ages in between. Only equipment required is non -marking indoor shoes as the club provides balls and has paddles for rent. The cost to play is $3 per evening and if you want to join the club an annual $5 membership fee. Last season the club played twenty nights with members played an average of seven nights. "Thirty per cent of our members are 'super pick- lers' and played over half the evenings," said Townsend. "We are always looking for new members that want to share in our crazy addic- tion called pickleball," Townsend added. The club made some changes this year by reduc- ing the cost to play and pur- chasing new nets. Townsend said new members can expect to have fun, get a great work- out, a little competition and Businesses and private individuals donated 290 gift items and 90 gift certificates. Pickleball is simple to learn, and beginners are often playing with club members after a quick les- son. It is similar to tennis and is played on a badmin- ton -sized court using a pad- dle and a whiffle ball. Pick- leball appeals to players of all ages as it is not as much a game of strength or speed but as much about team- work, shot accuracy and setting up the point.
