6 News Record • Wednesday, October 7, 2015 Clinton girls donate birthday money to hospital Local secondary schools perform well in OSSTF testing Laura Broadley Clinton News Record Ava Dawe and Julia Wynja, both 8 -years -old, donated $620 to the Clinton Public Hospital Foundation. The girls received donations instead of birthday presents. Pictured here, from left to right, Una Roy, Ava Dawe, Julia Wynja, and Virginia Steckle. Laura Broadley Clinton News Record Kids often finish their birthday parties with more presents than they can count. But Ava Dawe and Julia Wynja had a different idea. The Clinton Public School students decided that instead of getting presents for their shared eighth birthday party they would ask people to give money to donate to the Clinton Pub- lic Hospital. Ava decided she wanted to give back after learning of the plight of Syrian refu- gees. She approached Julia with the idea to which she quickly agreed. The girls raised $620 and presented it to CPH Foun- dation vice chair, Una Roy and Virginia Steckle, administrative executive assistant last Wednesday. Julia said she wanted to donate because both of her brothers were born there and Ava said her whole family uses the hospital. In another act of genuine humbleness both Ava and Julia insist they couldn't have raised the money without their friends and families. Roy said it is "absolutely amazing" that people so young are willing to put the needs of others before themselves. She said she is not aware of any child donating before. Roy said the hospital relies on donations and all the money goes directly into the Clinton Public Hospital to purchase medi- cal equipment or for upgrades. Roy said what- ever is needed most is given priority. The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) recently released the results from last years testing. The OSSLT is written every year in March in all private, public and Catholic second- ary schools in the province. It is used to assess stu- dents' reading and writing skills and is required to obtain an Ontario Secondary School diploma. Provincially, 93 per cent of first-time students partici- pated fully in the OSST in 2014-15, while within Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB) schools, that figure was 92 per cent. Eighty-two per cent of Ontario students were suc- cessful in the test, while AMDSB's success rate was 78 per cent. Goderich District Colle- giate Institute had a full par- ticipation rate of 88 per cent, while 81 per cent of students were successful in the test. F.E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham had 98 per cent participation but was below board and pro- vincial success rates at 71 per cent. Central Huron Secondary School in Clinton also had 98 per cent participation, above provincial and board levels, with an 81 per cent student success rate. South Huron District High School was below the provin- cial standard in participation at 86 per cent, but above the provincial and board levels of success with 86 per cent, the highest out of any Huron County secondary school. In the Huron -Perth Dis- trict Catholic School Board, St. Anne's Secondary School had a good showing with a 99 per cent participation rate and 90 per cent success rate.
