A wish come true
Steph Smith

"A dream is a wish your heart
makes," sang Cinderella in the
1950 Walt Disney film, and a
wish it will be that's coming true
for five-year-old Vanastra resi-
dent Reiko Quinlan.
Through the Make -A -Wish
Foundation of Canada, Reiko
will have his wish granted to go
to Disney World. Reiko and his
brothers had no idea the wish
had been granted until a reveal
party that took place at their
home on Sunday, October 4.
Reiko has Osteogenesis
imperfecta type 3, a disorder
commonly known as brittle
bone disease. According to his
mom Jessica, Reiko has had
more than 300 fractures, many
of which have occurred simply
by doing every day activities.
"Back in April Reiko was tallc
ing about wanting to go to Dis-
ney after seeing a commercial,"
Jessica said. "I decided to con-
tact Make -A -Wish and, after

Tina Strong Mahon has
had a rough couple of
months to say the least.
Mahon has had more
than her fair share of med-
ical problems. Among oth-
ers, she said her heart
only works at 30 per cent
that of a healthy one.
In the middle of July
Mahon had her left leg
amputated below the
knee. A crack in the bot-
tom of her foot led to an
infection that made its
way into her ankle bone
within only nine days.
Mahon was admitted to
hospital on July 14 and
had her leg amputated
two days later.
"There was no notice,"
said Mahon.
Attempts were made to
save her right leg but
those failed and Mahon
said it's now only a matter
of when she will lose that
leg as well.
The doctor wouldn't let
her go home unless her
house was mobile accessi-
ble otherwise she would
have to go into a nursing
home.
Mahon's husband used
all of his RRSP money to
accommodate her limited
mobility.
"My husband, family
members and friends built
the ramp that's outside,
put a chairlift in, widened
my bathroom door and
got me a shower chair,"
said Mahon.
If that wasn't enough
Mahon soon returned to
hospital with acute con-
gestive heart failure and a
heart attack. By the end of
August she had done one
more stay in the hospital
for stomach issues.
Mahon grew up in Clin-
ton but now lives in
Brucefield. Her maiden
name is Strong, which she
is using so people she
went to school with can
recognize her.
Mahon and her family
have reached out to vari-
ety of charities and
organizations that typi-
cally help people in her
situation. They've been
rejected by almost all
because the work has
already been done,
something that Mahon
said she wasn't aware
would affect her ability to
access those services.
She just wanted to go to
the comfort of her own
home after life -altering
surgery.
Mahon's five children
and her best friend have
organized a benefit on
October 17 to help Mahon
and her family recover
some of the costs they've
incurred. She also still
needs a customized
wheelchair and bathtub
lift.
The event is being held
from 4 - 11 p.m. at the
Clinton Legion. Tickets
are $5 in advance and $8
at the door. Snippety the
Clown will be in attend-
ance from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m.
The Norm Barlow Band
will play from 8 - 11 p.m.
There is food and a cash
bar available.
If you want to help but
are unable to attend the
benefit, an RBC account
(#5054721) has been
opened to accept dona-
tions under Tina Mahon.

You may experience discoloured water coming from your tap. If this happens, we suggest you try the
following:
• remove the tap aerators off your taps and flush the cold water house lines until it runs clear.
• flush out your hot water tanks. This is to remove the accumulated iron that precipitates out in the
tank; this iron may also decrease the efficiency of your water tank.
You may experience lower than normal pressure as a result of the flushing activities. We apologize for any
inconvenience this may cause. OCWA will continue to work on the flushing programs to ensure consumer
satisfaction.
