New water regulations were draining the water contingency resources that the Village of Bayfield had allotted for the year 2000 at a rate of $2,100 per month. Since the introduction of Ministry of Environment regulation on drinking water Bayfield's costs had run over that limit budgeted in the pre -Walkerton days of 1999. • Forty-four floats lit up Clinton in the annual Santa Claus parade. "The floats were all very impressive," Janet Cam- eron, committee member, said. • The Clinton Public Hospital expanded it role within the hospital partnership with the announcement that bone densitometry readings would be a part of its repertoire of services offered in town. The new equipment cost the hospital $100,000. 25 years ago... • The Reduce Impaired Driving Eve- rywhere holiday blitz had started in Clinton. The police had stopped about 385 vehicles over the weekend in five spot checks. In the course of those spot checks, the police charged on 40 -year- old Clinton man. • The Huron County Christmas Bureau helped 346 families. • General Manufactured Housing of Hensall had gone into receivership throwing 119 employees out of work. • Charter, former and current mem- bers of the Bayfield Lionness Club met to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the service club. • Over 174 customers, employees and family members gathered at the grand opening of Lavis Contracting Co.'s new offices and shop building on Highway 8 at Holmesville. 35 years ago... • A 42 -year-old man died in a single vehicle crash in Tuckersmith Township early on a Saturday morning. Shortly after 6 a.m., the driver failed to negoti- ate a curve and struck a tree. The van, carrying flammable liquids, burst into flames on impact. The van was com- pletely destroyed by the time the Clin- ton fire brigade arrived on scene. • Well-known children's author, Gor- don Korman, who was 16 -years -old at the time visited the Clinton branch of the Huron County Library. Korman had written four books by the time he was 16 -years -old. He began writing after an assignment for his grade seven English class. • An article in the London Free Press praised Bartliff's as having the best doughnuts in all of Ontario. OPP BRIEFS Impaired driver runs out of gas in stolen truck Goderich - Huron County OPP has charged a 35 -year-old driver from Bruce County with a number of offences after police received a call for assis- tance on Nov. 10. At approximately 6:15 a.m. Huron OPP officers received information about a vehicle that was parked in the middle of road at the intersection of Elgin Avenue West and Wellesley Street. An officer arrived on scene to find the male driver sitting in the driver's seat of a 2016 Dodge Ram pickup truck. The uncooperative driver failed to provide a driver's licence and initially refused to exit the truck. Eventually the driver exited his vehicle and while speak- ing with the driver, the officer observed several signs the driver was impaired by a drug. The driver was arrested for Care & Control of a Motor Vehicle While Impaired and Drive While Disqualified. A search incident to arrest was completed which resulted in police seizing a small quantity of methamphetamine and mar- ijuana. The driver was then given a demand to submit to a Drug Recognition Eval- uation. Ultimately the driver refused to complete the evaluation tests and dur- ing this process the driver physically assaulted an assisting officer. Further investigation also revealed the Dodge Ram pickup truck had been stolen a few days earlier from a car rental agency in Hanover. As a result, the accused is facing sev- eral charges. He remains in custody. The investigating officer would like to speak with an elderly couple that was on scene acting as good Samari- tans. They had a fuel can with them and were getting ready to help the driver prior to police arrival. OPP officer charged following two vehicle collision Huron East —An OPP officer has been issued a provincial offence notice fol- lowing a two vehicle collision on Nov. 17 at 11:40 a.m. The officer had completed a traffic investigation and was making a turn on Cardiff Road in Huron East when the fully marked police cruiser struck a parked vehicle. There was minor dam- age to both vehicles but no injuries were reported at the scene. The provincial constable was charged with Start from a Stopped Position — Not in Safety. Electric pump stolen from MTO yard Central Huron - OPP officers are cur- rently investigating the theft of an elec- A pump was stolen from an MTO yard ust west of Clinton. ric pump that was stolen from the MTO service yard located just west of Clinton on Highway 8. Sometime between Nov. 17 and 18 unknown person(s) entered onto the property and stole the pump from a storage box that was located beside a brine tank. The MTO used the pump to pump brine for road de-icing. The pump has a 220 volt electric motor attached and is val- ued at approximately $2,500. Historical sexual assault investigation reveals additional victims Huron County - The Huron County OPP Criminal Investigations Unit has iden- tified more victims in an ongoing his- torical sexual assault investigation that dates back to between 1971 and 1995. Five additional victims have been iden- tified who were all between the ages of 10 and 21 when the offences took place. Officers determined that the accused gained access to the victims through his employment at the Wing - ham & District Hospital and through his volunteer work as a Scout Leader with the 1st Wingham Scout troop. As a result of the further investigation, the accused, 71 -years -old from North Huron, is facing 21 additional charges. He has since been released from cus- tody with a court appearance scheduled in December. OPP festive RIDE program targets alcohol and drug impaired drivers Huron County - Police know that the approaching holiday season brings an increase in the number of alcohol impaired drivers on Ontario roadways. This means there is likely to be more tragedy on our roads in the days ahead. The OPP are setting up traffic stops around the province and around the clock as they kick off the 2015 Festive R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Every- where) campaign. This highly effective public safety initiative will run through- out the holiday period from Nov. 23 until Jan. 2, 2016. From January to October, the numbers of alcohol involved occurrences are up 3 per cent over the same period last year. As of Nov. 15, of the 258 persons killed during that time period, 35 fatal- ities were attributed to alcohol con- sumption. Thirteen people died when their off-road vehicle was involved in a collision; six of those persons had been impaired by alcohol. Police have seen the number of occur- rences of drug impaired driving rise in Ontario over the past year. Police are reminding the public during this Festive RIDE campaign that the OPP now have drug recognition officers with special- ized training to identify drug impaired drivers. The OPP also have a significant number of officers who conduct stand- ardized field sobriety tests on drivers who give police a reasonable suspicion of impairment by drugs. Last year the OPP charged 593 peo- ple with impaired -related charges dur- ing the Festive RIDE initiative. There were also 485 people who had their licenses suspended following a warn- ing. Huron County OPP charged a total of 19 impaired drivers during last year's campaign. Another three had their licences suspended following a warn- ing. Huron County OPP officers are also ask- ing the public to call the authorities if you see someone who gets behind the wheel after they have been drinking.
