OPP BRIEFS
Impaired driver
runs out of gas
in stolen truck
Goderich - Huron County OPP has
charged a 35 -year-old driver from
Bruce County with a number of offences
after police received a call for assis-
tance on Nov. 10. At approximately
6:15 a.m. Huron OPP officers received
information about a vehicle that was
parked in the middle of road at the
intersection of Elgin Avenue West and
Wellesley Street.
An officer arrived on scene to find the
male driver sitting in the driver's seat of
a 2016 Dodge Ram pickup truck. The
uncooperative driver failed to provide
a driver's licence and initially refused
to exit the truck. Eventually the driver
exited his vehicle and while speak-
ing with the driver, the officer observed
several signs the driver was impaired
by a drug. The driver was arrested for
Care & Control of a Motor Vehicle While
Impaired and Drive While Disqualified. A
search incident to arrest was completed
which resulted in police seizing a small
quantity of methamphetamine and mar-
ijuana.
The driver was then given a demand
to submit to a Drug Recognition Eval-
uation. Ultimately the driver refused to
complete the evaluation tests and dur-
ing this process the driver physically
assaulted an assisting officer. Further
investigation also revealed the Dodge
Ram pickup truck had been stolen a few
days earlier from a car rental agency in
Hanover.
As a result, the accused is facing sev-
eral charges. He remains in custody.
The investigating officer would like
to speak with an elderly couple that
was on scene acting as good Samari-
tans. They had a fuel can with them and
were getting ready to help the driver
prior to police arrival.
Any witnesses to this event are asked
to call the Goderich OPP detachment

OPP festive RIDE
program targets
alcohol and drug
impaired drivers
Huron County - Police know that the
approaching holiday season brings
an increase in the number of alcohol
impaired drivers on Ontario roadways.
This means there is likely to be more
tragedy on our roads in the days ahead.
The OPP are setting up traffic stops
around the province and around the
clock as they kick off the 2015 Festive
R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Every-
where) campaign. This highly effective
public safety initiative will run through-
out the holiday period from Nov. 23 until
Jan. 2, 2016.
From January to October, the numbers
of alcohol involved occurrences are up
3 per cent over the same period last
year. As of Nov. 15, of the 258 persons
killed during that time period, 35 fatal-
ities were attributed to alcohol con-
sumption. Thirteen people died when
their off-road vehicle was involved in a
collision; six of those persons had been
impaired by alcohol.
Police have seen the number of occur-
rences of drug impaired driving rise in
Ontario over the past year. Police are
reminding the public during this Festive
RIDE campaign that the OPP now have
drug recognition officers with special-
ized training to identify drug impaired
drivers. The OPP also have a significant
number of officers who conduct stand-
ardized field sobriety tests on drivers
who give police a reasonable suspicion
of impairment by drugs.
Last year the OPP charged 593 peo-
ple with impaired -related charges dur-
ing the Festive RIDE initiative. There
were also 485 people who had their
licenses suspended following a warn-
ing. Huron County OPP charged a total
of 19 impaired drivers during last year's
campaign. Another three had their
licences suspended following a warn-
ing.
Huron County OPP officers are also ask-
ing the public to call the authorities if
you see someone who gets behind the
wheel after they have been drinking.
Please call 9-1-1 and help keep your
community safe.
