of Rebecca Hill, widoe; of the late John
Mills, of West Wawanosh. which took
place on Wednesday, Jan 2, after only
a few hours illness from heart failure,
She and her late husband wore among
the early settlers and they endured many
of the trials and hardehips incident to
the pioneer's life. Their home was al-
ways a welcome for travellers, and no
neighbor needing a helping hand but
found the worthy couple ready to give

The community at Auburn was much
surprised on Wednesday, Jan 2nd - to
hear of the death of Mrs. Mills, relict of
late John Mills, Death was due to
neuralgia of nerves of heart, after but a
few hours illness. Deceased was in her
67th year. The family consists of one

Mr. James Wilson, an old and respect.
ed resident of Seaforth, passed away
very suddenly and easily on Tuesday
forenoon, Jany 8th. Mr. Wilson was
in hie usual health on Tuesday morning
and after breakfast he commenced writ-
ing a letter but finding it rather dark he
went to the stable to attend to the horse.
His daughter thinking he was absent a
long time went to the stable to see what
was keeping him. As she opened the
door she,found him kitting on a box on
the floor with his head hanging forward
and quite dead. Mr. Wilson had been a
resident of Seaforth for 30 years.
It is with feelings of deepest regret
that we announce the death of Mr. J. 13.

The oldest Oddfeilow on the continent
was the distinction that marked the late
Alex. Kirkbride, whose death occurred
at Goderioh, Saturday, Jany 5th, after
an illness of over six years. He was
born in Caton, Lancashire, England, in
1x23, and came to thi3 country about
fifty-six years ago, settling first at Sim -
coca From there ha moved to De-
troit, where he was married to Char-
lotte Lames, and about fifty-three years
ago came to Goderioh, of which 13e had
been a resident ever sinee. Besides his
widow he leaves a family of four. Mr.
Kirkbride remained at hie business of
blacksmith until illness overtook him,
some six or seven years ago. For sixty-
three yeara he was a member of the
Oddfellows, joining the order in Eng
land on the New Year's Eve after bis
twenty -fires birthday, and for forty-five

years lee was a member of the Masonic
fraternity.

The Railways and Canals manna re-
port shows that the railway mileage ot
Canada totals 2,518, an increase of 917
over the year before. There were 21,-
353 miles of railroad in operation and 4,-
035 miles of siding. Daring the year on
all of the railroads in Canada there were
361 persons killed, of whom 16 were
passengers, 139 employees and 206 per-
sons who- were neither. The injured
numbered 1,365; 239piiesengers, 800 em-
ployees, and 240 persons who were
neither. On 'July 1, 1306, electric rail-
ways had a capital of $63,857,090. The
gross earnings for the year were $10,-
966,872. Electric) railways killed 47 per-
sons, 12 passengers, 3 employees and 82
others. The injured numbered 1,653.

The annual meeting of. the Tucker.
smith Branch Agricultural Society was
held in the Commercial hotel, Seaforth,
Wednesday, Jany 9th, The past year
has been a most succesafnl one financial-
ly. After paying $000 in prizes and a
number of old score* as well as the past
year's indebtedness, the society practi-
oally ended the year with a clean sheet.
In accordance with the new agricultural
set the name of the society was changed
to the Seaforth Agricultural Society,
and the Ttckersmith Branch, whioh has
been in existence for nearly 50 years
past, is now no more. The dates of the
fair for 1907 were fixed for Thursday
and Friday, September 19th and 20th.

The death of Mrs. Trothen, whioh took
Place on Thursday, Jan. 3rd, at the home
of her nephew, Dr. Duncan Stevenson,
Mill street, Clinton, removes one of the'
oldest residents of town town, she having
reached the ripe old age of nearly ninety
years. The deoeased Iady, whose
maiden name was Macpherson, was born
in Kintyre, Scotland, on April 16, 1817,
and came to Canada with her first hus-
band, Mr, Wm. Brown, in the year 1844.
They purohased a farm in tho township
of East Williams from the late Rev. Dun-
can McMillan, who afterwards removed
to Caledon townehip,and died some years
ago at Komoka in his ninetieth year.
After the death of Mr. Brown she sold
the farm and removed to London, where
she was married to Mr. Wm. Trothen.
They afterwards lived in Westminster,
Oaradoo and Strathroy. In the latter
place Mr. Trothen died and Mrs.
Trothen removed to Orangeville, where
she lived for about twelve years. She
came to Clinton about two years ago
and lived with her nephew.
