Celebrating the International Year of Soils with ABCA
Laura Broadley
Clinton News Record
In Huron County there
is an abundance of soil
but that doesn't mean we
don't need to conserve.
The Ausable Bayfield
Conservation Authority
wants to educate the
community about the
importance of this valua-
ble resource to the local
area and economy.
Melissa Prout, with the
ABCA, was at St. Anne's
Catholic Secondary
School in Clinton on Nov.
5 to provide training to
the Specialist High Skills
Major students. The con-
servation authority was
providing free high-level
training on soils and
GPS.
Prout said the idea was
to help educate future
farmers of the importance
of conservation tillage or
no -tillage practices to the
health of the environment.
She stressed to the stu-
dents that soil is consid-
ered a non-renewable
resource because it is used
at a significantly faster rate
than it is developed.
The year 2015 is the
International Year of Soils
and Prout said this is a
prime opportunity to
spread the word about this
issue.
