Huron County OPP received a call shortly before 6 p.m. regarding a distraught woman about 30 metres from the shoreline. Police and family mem- bers were unable to rescue her from the rough waters. A helicopter and coast guard helped with the search and the woman was pulled from the water about an hour and half after the initial call. The woman was brought to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. As of Nov 6 the investiga- tion is ongoing. PLEASE et") RECYCLE Engage Huron working to keep young people in the county Laura Broadley Clinton News Record It's a problem that many rural regions in Ontario are fac- ing. Young people in their 20s and 30s are heading to urban centres like the GTA, often to pursue professional opportuni- ties that otherwise aren't avail- able to them. That's what Engage Huron is trying to stop. Deb Moran and Chris Watson from Engage Huron presented to Central Huron council on Nov 2. Watson started with his own story of coming to Huron County. He moved to Goder- ich in 2005 with his wife, a family physician. Four years later they almost left because there was a lack of opportuni- ties for Watson. He said a big part of that was being new to the area and unaware of potential prospects. "I didn't know a whole lot of people, hadn't grown up here. We came very close to pulling the plug," Watson said. It wasn't until he connected with the right people and opened a business of his own that he and his wife gave Goderich a second chance. They now have three children and have been in town for 10 years. During that period he's become more involved in the community. When Watson looks back on the time he almost left, he's likes to think about what kept him here and why he's glad he did end up deciding to stay. "I've spent a lot of time reflecting on that and trying to figure out what exactly it was," Watson said. Young people are scarce and have become harder to keep in Huron County, Watson said. Three years ago Watson con- nected with Central Huron councillor, Genny Smith and together they started Engage Huron. Early in 2015 Engage Huron were successful in getting some grant funding, which enabled it to hire an administration coor- dinator to help create terms of reference. This past summer the organization hired Jennifer Pate, a local entrepreneur who is new to the area. Three full working days were designated for the organization to develop the terms of reference and it was officially adopted in September. "With our terms of refer- ence what we really wanted to do was sit down and figure out exactly what it is that we're trying to do," Watson said. Engage Huron is to act as a connection "catalyst" between people of different demographics to encouraging networking and innovation. "Our mission is to recruit, retain and sustain people in their 20s and 30s in Huron County," Watson said. People who are not in those age brackets are still encour- aged to participate in the movement by being mentors. "We cannot succeed with- out the mentors who've already been through this before, without the folks that have had the experience in this area. Twenties and 30s are the target but they're certainly not the limit," Watson said. Watson explained the first step for Engage Huron is to keep the people that are already in the area. The sec- ond step would be to attract new people. The third step would be to sustain those developments. Engage Huron has pre- sented to county council and is hoping to have delegations at all the lower tier municipal- ities. As of now the group is only looking for help in identi- fying specific areas that could help it reach its goal. "I've always thought this was a good idea since the first time I heard it and I will continue to support it," Mayor Jim Ginn said. rynlee "cer e Anna Rathwell Nicolas Eveland Emily Colclough Colin Gibbings Kyra Leddy Allison Colquhoun Shayla Ward Brett Gibbings Emma Vanstone Savannah Rutledge Jordyn Clark ov. `1 Nov. 12 Nov. 12 Nov. 12 Nov. 14 Nov. 15 Nov. 15 Nov. 16 Nov. 18 Nov. 19 Nov. 23 Nov. 24 'you wish to haveyour coil s name & birthdate in the Birthday Club for ages 1-12, please call the office, it's free. 519-482-3443 IClinton News Record is currently looking for a local business to sponsor the weekly Birthday Club If you are interested in this adventure, I please contact Dawn Johnston dawn.johnston@sunmedia.ca 519-482-3443 Ext 527303 Thank you, Dawn Johnston py `.
