Asbestos building in the midst of being removed

There is one less "eye sore"
in Huron East as the town
council has voted unani-
mously to move forward
with the removal of a fairly
old structure in Vanastra.
This precise project is a
thorough process that could
potentially be filled with
asbestos -a natural material
that's microscopic and is
common in older buildings.
Exposure to asbestos (pre-
cisely breathing in asbestos),
is commonly believed to be
responsible for several seri-
ous and potentially fatal lung
diseases. These problems
started to occur in the 1950's
and had become quite com-
monplace in the 90s. Several
years later, it is still regularly
being found in homes and
buildings.
"Just about any building
you find in today's world will
have something that shows
up, those tiles on the outside
of the building, they were
common back in the 40s and
50's," described Huron East's
CAO, Brad Knight.
The abandoned site is the
size of about half a football
field and the demolition is
quoted at $62,800 plus HST,
by Wayne & Harold Smith
Construction. A price well
worth it said Knight, "it's in
bad shape" and he will be
more assured when the plan
begins.
"It's been in that condition
for a long time. The

municipality didn't have
direct control over it, but
they do now, from a phone
conversation Knight told the
Expositor. "It's a real eye sore
and it's a safety hazard."
Since every council mem-
ber agreed with the project
on Oct. 20, Knight's two page
document reviewed in the
chambers at the last meeting
revealed WAHSC is likely to
start demolition near the
end of October. Currently
the tender/quotation is
being developed.

High school math teachers learn to improve outcomes
Secondary math teachers
from across the district gath-
ered last week to sharpen
their teaching skills and fur-
ther improve learning strate-
gies for their students.
Led by Dr. Marian Small,
author and international
professional development
consultant for improved
mathematics education, the
educator teams zeroed in
particularly on improving
outcomes for students who
are not yet demonstrating a
standard level of math
proficiency.
The workshop coincides
with the latest report of
grade nine assessments of
math released this week by
the Education Quality and
Accountability Office
(EQAO).

The assessment measures
how well students of the aca-
demic and applied courses
have met the expectations of
the grade nine curricula. The
assessments are written each
semester during class time
in January and June 2015.
Provincial -level results for
the English language school
system will not be available
this year, as not all schools in
the system participated due
to labour disruptions. Every
school and school board in
the English system that fully
participated in the grade
nine math assessment
received a report of its
results, on Oct. 28.
Provincial results for the
French language system are
as follows: 82 per cent of stu-
dents in the academic math
course met the provincial
standard, a drop of 2 per-
centage points from 2014;
and 49 per cent of students
in the applied math course
met the provincial standard,
a drop of 2 percentage points
from 2014.
Avon Maitland District
School Board academic
and applied scores con-
tinue to maintain a positive
trend line with scores dip-
ping somewhat this year. Of
the students taking applied
mathematics, 55 per cent
successfully met the pro-
vincial standard (from 61
per cent). Of the students
taking academic mathe-
matics, 84 per cent success-
fully met the provincial
standard (from 90 per
cent).
