Spring is the perfect time to give some serious thought to making sure this summer is a safe one on the water. With this goal in mind, the Ontario Conservation Officers Asso- ciation (OCOA) joins the Canadian Safe Boating Coun- cil (CSBC) to promote the annual North American Safe Boating Awareness Week, May 16 to May 22. "Our members actively enforce the laws regarding safe boating"; said OCOA president Tim Rochette, an Ontario conservation officer based in North Bay, and an active angler and boater himself. "It is the responsi- bility of every boater to ensure that they enjoy the outdoors safely." At the core of the 2015 campaign are the five key messages that we have been consistently delivering to the boating community: Wear a PFD or lifejacket Don't drink and boat Take a boating course Be prepared; both you and your vessel Be wary of the dangers of cold -water immersion "Our members will be on the water during Safe Boating Awareness Week, whether working or enjoying some rec- reational time with our fami- lies; Rochette said. "I encour- age all anglers and boaters to start now to help us make this an accident free season." Anyone looking for more information about boating safety is encouraged to visit the CSBC website at www. csbc.ca. For more informa- tion about natural resources regulations and enforce- ment, please visit the OCOA website at www.ocoa.ca, or contact your local conserva- tion officer. Touch the Truck returns June 20 Scott Currie Special to the News Record Kids will get a chance to get up close to trucks they often see but rarely get to touch at the seventh annual Touch the Truck event on Saturday, June 20. What child doesn't dream about getting behind the steering wheel of a fire truck, an ambulance, a road grader or a dump truck? Their wild- est dreams will come true when they get up close to the real rigs at this popular event! You will find the big vehi- cles, rain or shine, from 9 a.m. until noon at Lavis Park, located on Highway 8, Holmesville. Children and the young at heart will be able to see, touch and learn about the mighty machines, farm equipment and emergency vehicles at this family friendly event. Admission is free, but participants are asked to bring a non-perish- able food item and help fill a loader bucket for the Salva- tion Army in Clinton. There's nothing like a big hunk of metal to attract a lit- tle child like a magnet. Road graders, tractors, dump trucks and many more vehi- cles will be available for chil- dren to explore while par- ents learn how to incorporate more literacy activities into all of their child's interests. Pedal tractor course, bale maze, a large gravel play area and a chance to build or paint a letter are just a few of the many activities organ- ized by Huron County Chil- dren's Services staff for this special family literacy event.
