Gifted students from across the Huron -Perth Catholic District School Board had the chance to
participate in a coding workshop led by Western University professor of mathematics education, Dr.
George Gadanidis, at the board office in Dublin May 7.

Catholic school board hosts
coding session for area students

Leela Pereira, a Grade 8
student from St. Columban
School, said she enjoyed
playing around with
Scratch and Python and
she plans to continue cod-
ing at home and in school.
"It was really fun because
I was expecting a lot more
math and I'm not a very big
math student - I just don't
like it very much - but it
turned out it was actually
really fun," Pereira said.
Myles Novotny, a Grade 6
student from St. Mary's
School in Listowel said he
had previously used
Scratch on the iPads at
school, but he enjoyed
meeting new friends and
learning a few new tricks at
the coding workshop.
"I thought it was really
great - tinkering, that's me.
You got to do your own
thing and learn a lot. You
also got to make a lot of
new friends, actually,"
Novotny said. "It was really
great because my dad
works for Wightman (Tele-
com) and he uses code a lot
and I think he'll be really
impressed when he figures
out that I know how to do
this."
Both Novotny and
Pereira said the workshop
was a lot of fun, and
because of that, neither of
them fully realized they
were learning practical
mathematics, some of
which is way above their
grade in school.
