From E -waste to

The parent council of
Huron Centennial School
fundraised last week by col -

lecting electronic waste.
The waste is then picked
up by Ontario Electronic
Stewardship (OES) and
weighed to determine how
much money is given to the
school. The OES sends the
waste to a recycling centre to
be dismantled into recycla-
ble parts. The goal is to even-
tually use the parts in new
products.
Viable electronic waste
includes televisions, com-
puters/laptops, printer, copi-
ers, telephones, cellphones,
cameras and video
recorders.
The fundraiser was for the
primary yard playground
because approximately
every ten years the equip-
ment needs to be replaced.
The school board funds the
replacement of the play-
ground base but the rest is
up to the school, said
Tammy Dowell, member of
the parent council.
The type of playground
currently in the primary yard
is meant for older children
so the parent council
decided to try and raise
money to replace it with
equipment that is more suit-
able for younger children.
