"When it gets warmer and the spring rains come, the snow disappears," Iszczuk said. "At this time of year, in late winter and early spring, water is cold and the banks are slippery and stu- dents should stay away from rivers and streams:' Spring water awareness lessons help students under- stand for themselves the dan- gers high water and thin ice can pose. The students don't just listen to facts about the dangers of water in late win- ter and early spring. They learn through activities that are engaging and interactive. Conservation educators deliver three presentations designed for different ele- mentary grade -level groups - primary, junior, and interme- diate. The Spring Water Awareness Program helps students to better understand river systems and the hazards associated with them. Students from Kindergar- ten to Grade 8 enjoy educa- tional activities designed for their grade level. The stu- dents learn about the dan- gers of seasonal water haz- ards, such as slippery stream banks, fast -running waters, and thin ice. Parents, guardians, and teachers can find some safety -around -water infor- mation online at abca.on.ca. The page is located at www. abca.on.ca/page.
