Former Clinton
resident hopes to
shoot new film in
Huron County
Film producer and former
Huron County resident,
Valerie Laurie, is currently
working on her first feature
film, Drowning. Laurie was
raised just outside of Clinton
and, although she is now liv-
ing in Toronto, she hopes to
return to her hometown this
summer to shoot some of
her film.
As a film student I would
come back to Huron County
to shoot my short films
because the community was
gracious in opening loca-
tions to me," Laurie states.
"Since this feature film will
still be very low -budget
we're hoping the community
will welcome us back to
shoot in locations that would
otherwise be difficult or
expensive to get in the city."
Drowning is the story of
Anna, an ex -prostitute who
returns home after many
years, documenting her
journey of reinvention,
revenge and the horrible
after-effects of the human
trafficking industry. The
movie explores the repercus-
sions on the physical and
emotional well-being of a
prostituted woman as she
tries to break from the men
who have coerced, manipu-
lated, bought and sold her.
Laurie and writer/direc-
tor Pasquale Marco Veltri
from Mississauga bring a
combined 30 years experi-
ence to the set having
worked throughout the
industry in both produc-
tion and post, including
Laurie's current 8 -year
stint at the CBC. This
marks their first feature
film and their first crowd -
funding effort.
The Canadian film indus-
try is a difficult nut to crack
as the current funding
mechanisms do not offer
support for emerging film-
makers. However, as Laurie
explains, the movie may be
new but the creators are
already well-established
professionals.
"We have both been work-
ing in the industry for 15
years, perfecting our crafts
and honing our relation-
ships with key talent. Making
a great movie isn't a con-
cern," she said. "We know we
can do that with our skills
and our amazing script. Pay-
ing for it is another matter
entirely."
Drowning Pictures has
started an indiegogo cam-
paign to raise the first
$25,000 for the film, with the
official launch of their
crowd -funding pitch on
March 2.
Anyone interested in help-
ing finance the film can lend
their support through the
indiegogo link at: http://igg.
me/at/drowning. The
crowd -funding campaign
runs until April 2 and the
funds raised will go to offset-
ting production costs.
The toll of human traffick-
ing in North America is a
story that is too often
ignored, and one which
emerging production com-
pany Drowning Pictures
sheds light on with its fea-
ture film, Drowning.
Drowning Pictures will
specialize in Feature Film,
Television and Web content.
