Central Huron Secondary School Varna news
boys curling team wins title
CONTINUED FROM > PAGE 15
The victory marks the second
consecutive year the team from
the Clinton -based school has
taken the trophy and grants the
talented squad an opportunity
to potentially repeat as provin-
cial champions at the Ontario
Federation of School Athletic
Associations (OFSAA) tourna-
ment later this year.
The CHSS squad, however,
will have to win another tourna-
ment to gain admission to the
OFSAA competition, which they
won in 2014.
Doig credits his resourceful
and experienced team for never
giving up at the Gore tourna-
ment despite falling behind
early in the final.
"When I went out for the
fourth end break, (the players)
were down a bit - they were still
down by three (at the time)," he
said. "I just told them to keep
plugging away and that they
were doing very well and be
proud of themselves no matter
what happens."
"They kept plugging away and
never gave up," he added.
The student -players put "a lot
of pressure" on themselves to
repeat as champions at the

Gore tournament and win a
chance to play again at OFSAA,
Doig said, adding that claiming
title a second time around is
"actually harder" than winning
it the first time.
Their previous experience in
similar situations, he noted, also
helped the players calmly
recover from going down early.
In addition to last year's tri-
umphs, the CHSS team also par-
ticipates in the Ontario Junior
Curling Tour.
"Their confidence is very
high," Doig said. "But winning it
a second time is a different sort
of pressure - when you're the
defending champions, everyone
is out to beat you."

Villagers may find page 2 of last week's
Focus newspaper of interest. The article is
about a new series of youth dance lessons
being offered in the Grand Bend Fitness
Centre by Elizabeth Morgan, owner of
Expressions Dance Arts Inc. You know Liz
as Liz Swan, daughter of Rev. Colin and
Jane Swan. The Swans lived in the
Londesborough manse when Liz was just
a young pupil at Hullett Central.
Liz has been dancing and teaching in
a variety of venues since she was three.
The article suggests other classes for
other ages are possible depending on
the interest shown. If you've always
wanted to dance like no one is watch-
ing, this maybe your chance.
Last I heard John Lyons was expect-
ing to be transferred back to Goderich
Hospital for rehab and recovery. He will
be able to get his dialysis there as well.
As I prepare this column I'm watch-
ing my first race of 2015, the Daytona
500. It feels just a trifle weird to look
out the windows at the heaps of snow
we have this month while the race
commentators are concerned that the
high temperatures at Daytona will
affect the performances of the cars
and drivers. It always surprises me to
watch a race and get the impression
the track is flat. We visited this track
years ago and believe me the banking
is tremendous. Thirty-three degrees
as evident in shots of the corners.
