Bluewater strongly represented at ROMA conference in Toronto
Dave Flaherty
QMI Agency
The Municipality of Blue -
water was well represented at
last week's Rural Ontario
Municipal Association
(ROMA) conference in
Toronto.
Mayor Tyler Hessel, Deputy
Mayor Jim Fergusson, CAO
Gary Long, public works man-
ager Jeanette Walker and
roads superintendent Mike
Masse all made the trip and
had meetings scheduled with
Lou Rinaldi, MPP and Parlia-
mentary Assistant to the Min-
ister of Municipal Affairs,
Arthur Potts, MPP and Parlia-
mentary Assistant to the Min-
ister of Agriculture, Food and
Rural Affairs, Marie -France
Lalonde, MPP and Parliamen-
tary Assistant to the Minister
of Economic Development,
Employment and Infrastruc-
ture and MPP Ernie Harde-
man, PC Municipal Affairs
Critic.
Hessel told QMI Agency
that the purpose of their trip
was to help build "positive
working relationships with the
province and other levels of
government" to further
advance Bluewater's
interests.
"Our biggest concern is
how we can raise revenues,
maintain our services and
invest in infrastructure while
limiting future tax increases,"
Hessel said.
Hessel said they also
wanted to promote the value
of a "rural lens" that is being
developed for Huron County.
Bluewater faces the chal-
lenge of being a very large,
spread out municipality that
still has a relatively small pop-
ulation, Hessel said.
The geography of the
municipality lends itself to a
significant amount of roads
that have to be maintained
without a growing tax base.
Hessel noted that in the
past few years the "financial
crunch" many municipalities
are facing has gone has
become a top issue.
The meetings are not meant
to be politically motivated as
Hessel said they want to get
their message out to all parties.
While it is not a rare occur-
rence to hear about the grow-
ing divide between the rural
and urban parts of Ontario,
Hessel said rural Ontario
municipalities must be proac-
tive when dealing with upper
levels of government - adding
that "sitting on the sidelines"
has not been effective.
He said those who choose
to live in rural Ontario do so
for a certain lifestyle but local
municipalities can't do every-
thing on their own.
"If our communities fail
there will be less small busi-
nesses and people will have to
go to cities for employment,"
he said.
"It's important that the
interests of small rural munic-
ipalities are being heard at the
provincial level and we need
strong advocates at the Cabi-
net table. I want to make sure
that Bluewater is part of the
conversation and that we're
offering ideas and solutions."
