Wednesday, June 24, 2015 • News Record 23 Hallett students learn the history of war planes Brenda Radford Special to the News Record Have we had enough rain yet? Would be nice to find a day to cut the grass. Puzzle this for the coming week. Where did the term "sleep tight" originate? In a recent column I com- mented on the number of activities taking place for the children at Hullett Central this month. I did some arm - twisting of a grandson, Braden, who visited the Hamilton Airplane Museum last Monday. He offered the following account of the trip. "On June 8 the grade five - six and six -seven pupils trav- elled to Hamilton to the Canadian War Plane Herit- age Museum. There were several other school groups there that day as well. Upon arrival we were divided into two groups and sent to different classrooms. We learned about the four forces of flight and did two experiments. One experi- ment was about molecules and the other was about water and air. Later we looked at all the planes and learned what types they were, for example, Spitfire. After lunch we heard a story about two Canadians who received Victoria Crosses for their part in World War Two, Andrew Mynarski and John Hornell. Mynarski received his for his flights in a Lancaster. We learned that the Lancaster that for many years was on display at the Goderich air- port is one of two left in the world. Last summer that plane flew to Britain to fly alongside the other pre- served plane. Consequently they realized the eng'ne was It Starts with You! wwv, pitch n,c PITCH -IN CANADA! in trouble and are now fixing it in Hamilton. We saw that airplane. Outside the museum we looked at the `Buffalo; a plane that was shot down in World War Two with nine people aboard. At some point the museum had a fire. The airplane known as the Hurricane was the only plane that did not survive the fire. We saw a model of that plane. The last activity we did was to make paper gliders." I also learned that the "Jump" trip taken by grade seven pupils was to Wilfrid Laurier University. The pupils stayed in the univer- sity dorms, toured the com- plex and took various classes intended to introduce them to career choices. It appar- ently opened their eyes to paths most of them knew nothing about, medicine, science, psychology and etcetera. Londesborough United Church Those who attended Londesborough United Church on Sunday, June 14 were treated to an interest- ing and heart warming ser- vice conducted by the Sun- day school. Congregants were met by young folk greeting, ushering and gen- erally being welcoming. A number of young piano pupils shared their musical talent as folk gathered in the pews. A Sunday school grad- uate, Quinn Whyte, was in charge of the power point showcasing the children and their activities over the year. They sang Songs of Praise to the King of Kings and What I Am. This fun sec- ond song was written by Ses- ame Street actor, Well I Am. As they sang they told listen- ers about their character and held up words to reinforce these traits, eg musical, smart, grouchy, proud, friendly, etc. Sandy Bergsma and Kerri Whyte recognized with a gift each of the children who attend Sunday school and thanked the many helpers and teachers who gave their time over the past year. The congregation also showed their appreciation for having this Sunday School part of their faith community. During the message part of the morning service Crys- tal Whyte and the children shared some of their Science Sundays experiments. These Sundays are intended to connect Bible stories with today's world. The premise of the first experiment was to show how asking God for help in a difficult time works. This experiment using five small stones correlated with the David and Goliath story. The children are taught that God forgives our sins and cleanses us if we go to Him in prayer. Each of the children, those who had sinned, added a drop of food colouring to a bowl of clear water. Then Crystal added a chlorine liquid to the bowl and the water cleared. Christians are taught that God has given each of us gifts and talents which He intonnewsrec s II .co OFFICE 519-565-5100 6B Main St. N. Bayfield 1109 Il- nnErmi T°.'''!
