There have been a series of
upgrades to the Vanastra Rec-
reation Centre over the past few
years.
A "community tree" was
unveiled last Wednesday to rec-
ognize community members
and businesses that donated to
the renovation project.
The fundraising campaign
started in 2012 as a way to help
renovate different parts of the
centre. Lisa Berard approached
Huron East Council with a pro-
posal and a committee was
started.
"We're really passionate
about what we're doing," she
said.
The facility upgrade is
divided into three different
phases.
Phase one is already com-
pleted and included painting in
the pool area and hallways,
replacing doors throughout the
building and the resurfacing of
the deck.
Phase two, which was com-
pleted in 2013, included replac-
ing floors, doors, ductwork and
the pool area ceiling.
Phase three included new
washrooms and a barrier -free
washroom for the community
hall.
The community tree was a
way to thank the donors byhav-
ing their names on the wall of
the building's entrance.
There were three levels of
donations that received leaves
on the community tree; bronze
leaf ($500 - $999), silver leaf
($1,000 - $2,499) and gold leaf
for $2,500 and over.
Huron East Councilor Ray
Chartrand said while not every-
one who donated got a leaf on
the tree, all donations helped
significantly to the overall suc-
cess of the project.
The fundraising team has
raised $354,750 so far but the
total project cost is estimated to
be around $360,000.
A combination of financial
support from the Municipality
of Huron East, former ward
Tuckersmith reserves, a Tril-
lium Foundation grant, fund-
raisers and donations as well
as the Vanastra Recreation
Centre operating budget has
contributed to the funds
raised to date.
The fundraising committee
held different activities to help
raise money including a mur-
der mystery dinner, swim-a-
thon, Yuk Yuk silent auction,
hypnotist, chicken dinner,
yard sale and Valentine's kids
date night.
The recreation centre is a
staple to Vanastra and the sur-
rounding areas. The facility is
the home to the Huron Hurri-
canes, St. Anne's and Central
Huron Secondary swim
teams.
Daycare, lifeguarding, first
aid training and swimming
classes for all ages are just
some of the services offered.
