The group held a rally at the facility on Wednesday, June 10, with the hope of convincing the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services to reopen the centre. Anjela McCool was working at the Bluewater Youth Centre when it was closed in March 2012; resulting in the loss of 200 jobs. She said the government has wasted $93 million in building the Roy McMurtry Youth Cen- tre in Brampton. "They were told not to build it, but they didn't listen and now it is closing," McCool said. She further criticized plans to open three new correctional facilities, stating that money could be used to re -open the local centre as either an adult correctional facility or a location for female prisoners suffering from mental illness, something she said the province currently lacks. Many former employees have found jobs across Ontario but have chosen to remain liv- ing locally. For example, McCool has a four-hour daily commute, driv- ing back and forth to Milton. She estimated that if the cen- tre were reopened about 50 per cent of the former employees would be interested in returning. The building is currently owned by Infrastructure Ontario and has been decom- missioned and stripped of its fixtures. Goderich Mayor Kevin Mor- rison said he and his council are completely behind the idea of having the centre reopened. He said there was very little notice given of the facility's closure and with overcrowd- ing taking place at correc- tional facilities across the province, the Liberals should have looked at different options for the Bluewater Youth Centre instead of dos- ing it. He employees for trying to get their message out. "They provided a well needed service and the gov- ernment yanked the carpet from under their feet," Morri- son said. commended the Central Huron Mayor Jim Ginn said the bitterness from the centre's closing could still be felt three years later. He feels it wouldn't take too much of an investment to get the building back up and running. "All the ingredients are there," he said. Most importantly, he believes, it would bring jobs back to the local area. "The municipality has always wanted those lands to be used to create well -paying jobs," he said. Ginn and Morrison along with a number of other mem- bers of county council made a stop at the rally. Ginn said reopening the centre would be beneficial for the entire county, not just Goderich and Central Huron.
