Anne of Green Gables - The Musical, which is plays through to June 27 at the Huron Country Playhouse, does exactly that while still capturing the heart of the classic story. "Anne of Green Gables is an enduring favourite of the- atregoers and brings back such fond memories for me personally," says Alex Musta- kas, Artistic Director of Dray- ton Entertainment. "I am delighted to present this Canadian classic to our audiences in Grand Bend, as it is the perfect setting for this beloved story." Anne comes to Green Gables, the home of Mat- thew and Marilla Cuthbert. The Cuthberts are dismayed at getting a girl from the orphanage after requesting a boy to help the aging Mat- thew with chores. The Cuth- berts decide to keep Anne after briefly contemplating giving her away. Anne is a young, red- haired force to be reckoned with in a small and some- what unforgiving town. The play sees Anne navigating life and overcoming obsta- cles in a bid to reach her full potential. When Anne enrolls at the local school the story really takes off. The choreography was well executed and not over -the -top, which fit the atmosphere. Starring in the title role, Danielle Wade captures the spirit and wistfulness that a young Anne needs to exe- cute the part. Wade is the winner of CBC's Over the Rainbow reality TV show. The show featured contest- ants competing for the role of Dorothy in Toronto's Wiz- ard of Oz. She also starred as Cinderella in Cinderella, Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, Cinderella in Into the Woods and Janet Van de Graaf in The Drowsy Chaperone. She will take on the role of Ariel Moore in Footloose after Anne. Wade plays opposite Ted Simonett in the role of Mat- thew Cuthbert. Wade and Simonett's connection is obvious from their very first scene together. In that scene Matthew doesn't say very much, which isn't required when Simonett is behind the reigns. Simonett is able to tell the audience exactly how his character feels without saying anything. Susan Gilmour's experience is obvious in her part of Marilla Cuthbert. Marilla has an icy demeanor while still caring deeply for her brother and Anne. Gilmour plays the part perfectly without overempha- sizing either aspect of Marilla's personality. Gilmour is actress with international credits, star- ring on Broadway, around North America and the world. Anne of Green Gables has been translated into 17 lan- guages and adapted for the screen and theatre. The musi- cal adaptation has showed to over 3.3 million people worldwide.
