Central Huron Secondary School
held its fifth annual photography show
last Tuesday.
The show is a chance for students,
staff, alumni and community members
to show off their photography skills at
the end of the school year.
The student -run event is meant to be
as open and inclusive as possible to
showcase different aspects of
photography.
The CHSS photography students edit
and print everything in-house, giving
them further opportunity to practice
the process between when a photo is
taken to when it's printed.
Each year the attendees are allowed
to bid on the photos in a silent auction.
There is also a photo book printed with
a selection of the best pieces, which is
also available through the auction.
CHSS photography teacher Jacqui
Vercruyssen said the money raised
from the silent auction would go back
into the high school's photography pro-
gram. The event gives the school the
chance to purchase equipment that it
wouldn't normally have.
This year's featured photographer
was grade 12 student Valerie Wester-
hout. Each year a featured photogra-
pher is chosen and their photos are
used in the promotions and on the
photo book.
"A lot of hard work and effort went
into this," Westerhout said.
Westerhout has been interested in
photography since she was 8 -years -old.
Starting off with an iPod nano she even-
tually moved on to her grandma's
"fancy" camera.
Westerhout's grandma lives on Lake
Huron and she said the lake was one of
her first inspirations. She loves land-
scapes and is experimenting a lot with
silhouettes but said she likes challeng-
ing herself.
"I can see through the lens," she said.
In her last year at CHSS, Westerhout
will be studying agriculture at Ridge -
town in the fall but said that won't stop
her from pursuing photography; agri-
culture is just one more inspiration.
