Mr. Allan Thompson, the Lib- eral candidate for Huron Bruce, introduced him as one of the greatest humanitarians that he had ever known. As General Dallaire shared his life's story, one had to agree that he was a man of a great compas- sion, humility, intellect and vision. He is a man possessed of a deep caring for all human beings, regardless of colour, religion, faith and social status. Despite being a retired military man, he lamented the vast amounts of money being spent by the world's leaders on arms and the military. As I listened to his story unfold, I was convinced that he would much rather wage peace than wage war. He drew atten- tion to fact that Canada has lost its reputation as a nation of peacekeepers and that Can- ada, as a middle power, could have a greater emphasis on peacekeeping, if only our national leadership chose to do so. As the next federal election draws near, it is important that Canadians discuss with candi- dates the need for Canada to reconnect with the United Nations in order to restore Canada's hitherto first class, internationally respected reputation as a peace -loving and peacekeeping nation. In so doing, each one of us can help to keep General Dallaire's vision of a more just and peaceful world alive. Yours sincerely, Jim Hollingworth, MD., Goderich From the archives 15 Years Ago The Clinton Spring Fair continued with its 146th edition. The fair hosted its first ever soapbox derby. The fair ambassador competition was can- celled for lack of competitors. Four unconfirmed cases of E. Coli were reported in Huron County. This was the year that the Walker - ton's water supply was contami- nated; killing five people and 1000 became sick. Authorities assured residents of Clinton that their water supply was rigorously tested for the bacteria each week. 25 Years Ago A Main Street fire cost a young fam- ily their home and belongings. The fire occurred in mid-afternoon at an Albert Street apartment. Then Fire Chief Fred Lobb said, "It was only a matter of minutes between the time she discovered the fire and it engulfed the apartment" The 136th Clinton Spring Fair was held with larger crowds than ever before. Spring Fair President, Paul Wheeler declared the fair a "roaring success': 35 Years Ago The Clinton branch of the Huron county Health Unit was determined to be an addition to the Huronview Home for the Aged. Clinton citizen Frank Cook was honoured by the Clinton Kinsmen with a lifetime membership to the club. Cook was a charter member, past presi- dent and founder of the Kinsmen Raceway. An advertisement in the Clinton News Record by the Ontario Ministry of Labour promoted equal pay between women and men. The points in the ad described how employers couldn't pay male workers more based on small differences in their work. The ministry added extra staff to the Employment Standards branch to enforce the equal pay law. IMAGINE THE DiFFERhNCF A WISH CAN MAKE_ Ir THI CH I 1.
