receives $5000 donation

The Healthy Headwaters Wetlands
Initiative of the Ausable Bayfield Con-
servation Authority received a $5000
donation from Enbridge.
The initiative works with landowners
in the area to enhance, create and
restore wetlands in the region.
"We design a wetland and some-
where to hold water back on the prop-
erty. We recreate and so sometimes we
do excavations and sometimes we have
to hold the water back if it's flowing
through," said Rachael Scholten, stew-
ardship technician with ABCA.
Wetlands are important because it
provides water storage, improves water
quality, replenishes groundwater sup-
plies and reduces flooding and
erosion.
In pre -settlement times south-west-
ern Ontario had more than 20 per cent
wetland coverage. Today the wetland
coverage is approximately two per cent,
according to the ABCA.
"The idea is to keep the water on the
land longer so it has a chance to settle
sediment and nutrients out before
going into our drainage," said Scholten.
Every project is different because the
particular characteristics are different
for each piece of land.
It's not just restoring wetlands that
were previously in the location, some-
times technicians have to create them.
"They're all different and they can
take time after we recreate them to
evolve back into their natural state after
they're constructed," said Scholten.
The Healthy Headwaters Wetlands Ini-
tiative is a joint mission of the ABCA,
Huron Stewardship Council, Middlesex
Stewardship Council and Ducks Unlim-
ited Canada. The initiative restores 50 to
170 acres each year. This can include
restoring or creating five to 10 wetland
sites and planting 23,000 to 31,000 trees.
Scholten notes that a lot of the land
in the area has been cleared for agricul-
ture and said that now there is the
opportunity to restore some of the land
back to its natural state.
