Clinton girl gets chance of a lifetime
Laura Broadley

A lot of pressure comes
when 45,000 people are
watching you in the stadium
and countless others are
watching from home.
Allysha Whaling, at just
12 -years -old, took on that
challenge on July 10 when
she performed with Cirque
du Soleil in the opening cer-
emonies of the 2015 Pan Am
games. She shrugged off the
pressure and relied on her
skills to help her through the
performance.
Whaling was one of hun-
dreds of children who audi-
tioned last February to be a
part of the historic
performance.
Just the audition was a
commitment in itself. Ally-
sha and her mom, Jennifer,
travelled to Toronto to take
part of a full-day audition
process. Cuts were made
throughout the day, each
time the pair prepared for
the worst.
Before the duo went to the
city, Jennifer warned Allysha
not to get her hopes up. But
she kept making it through
until the final list was
announced and Allysha's
name was on it, said Jennifer.
While Allysha said she was
excited, a refreshing humble-
ness brought her thoughts to a
friend who didn't make the
final cut.
Months of grueling prac-
tices, lots of travel to and from
Toronto and even more
secrets finally came to fruition
a few weeks ago.
After the parade of nations,
the Cirque du Soleil show
began. Meant to represent
Canada's beginnings as a
nation, it paid homage to four

native Canadian animals (a
bear, caribou, woodpecker
and owl). The animals were
meant to guide the children
through the birth of the
country.
While most people would
shy away from such exposure,
Allysha is not a first -timer
when it comes to the stage. A
"veteran" of Dance Tech-
niques, she worked with
Cirque du Soleil two years ago
at a children's camp, exclusive
