Central Huron has been
blooming over the last few
weeks.
The area was host to two
judges from the Communities
in Bloom organization from
July 6 to 8.
The Communities in Bloom
program sees a volunteer jury
of trained professional evalu-
ate the entire community;
municipal, private, corporate
and institutional sectors, as
well as the citizens.
Eight criteria are considered
during judging; tidiness, envi-
ronmental action, heritage con-
servation, urban forestry, land-
scape, turf & groundcovers,
floral displays and community
involvement.
The judges award a bloom
rating between one and five,
which will be announced at a
provincial awards ceremony
in the fall.
The judges visited all over
Central Huron last week.
Central Huron CIB commit-
tee members showed the
judges "hidden gems" in the
municipality.
CIB is so much more than
just flowers and gardens. It
takes a lot of work and com-
munity partnerships to make
it happen, said councillor
and committee member,

Last year Central Huron
received four out of five
blooms and had a commit-
tee of four people. This year
the committee has grown
to eight people, said
Anderson.
A special contest was
held by the Central Huron
CIB committee this year.
Winners of the first "best
blooming property" contest
were announced on July 7
at the mayor's mingle.
Mayor Jim Ginn's sister,
Laurie Ginn, won in the
rural category.
Ken and Marlene Van
Riesen's property on Wil-

It's a 12 month commit-

anniversary on July 17 and
18.
They're extremely proud
of winning the contest and
grateful for the community
support, said George.

Central Huron councillor
Genny Smith has been accused of
a conflict of interest by former
councillor Brian Bamim.
Barnim filed an application
with the Ontario Superior Court
of Justice at the beginning of June.
In the application he accuses
Smith of having violated the
Municipal Conflict of Interest Act.
The application alleges that a
conflict of interest arose in rela-
tion to Smith's interactions with
Windmill Lake Wake & Eco Park
and her duties as councillor.
None of the allegations have
been proven in court.
"Ms. Smith denies any conflict
of interest and has throughout
maintained her obligations to the
council and the community" said
Smith's lawyer, Quern Ross.
Lawyers for Barnim said they
weren't able to make a comment
as it was too early in the
proceedings.
A court date has been set for
July 22 at 10 a.m. at the Ontario
Superior Court of Justice,
Goderich.
