Canada Member of the Canadian Community Ci lia Newspaper Association and the Ontario Community Newspapers Association editorial Khadr's victims matter "I hear over and over how he's the victim, he's the child. I don't see that... The victims — the children — are my children. Not you. They're the ones hurting. You made a choice, my children had no choice." The speaker, Tabitha Speer, is referring to Omar Khadr as the one who made the choice. That's a quote from her that ran in the Toronto Sun in 2010. Khadr, Speers' emotional quote explains, is the one who chose to throw a hand grenade at Speer's husband, US Army Medic Sgt. Christo- pher Speer, in Afghanistan in 2002. Now it's time for Khadr to pay the price for his actions. At least that's the message sent last week by a U.S. judge. He awarded Speer and Layne Morris - a soldier partially blinded by Khadr's grenade throwing - $134.2 million in damages. Khadr, who is now out on parole in Canada and living at his lawyer's house, clearly doesn't have this money. He's been behind bars for all of his adult life. But he is currently suing Canadian taxpayers for $20 million, alleging that the gov- ernment violated his civil rights. It would be a cruel world indeed if Khadr become a multimillionaire and the real victims got nothing. "It's really more of a David Bloom Postmedia Network Omar Khadr speaks to the media outside his lawyer's west Edmonton home, where he will be staying after being granted parole on May 7, 2015. statement case, I think, than a desire to collect this," lawyer Laura Tanner, who represents Speer and Morris, told media. It's a good statement too. It sends the message that Khadr isn't the victim in this story. As we wrote in this space back in May: "It's reasonable to believe Khadr was mis- treated. But it's not at all reasonable to turn him into a hero." Unfortunately, some Canadians treat Khadr as a sort of symbol for the oppressed or for human rights. We don't get it. Sure, reasonable people can take issue with Guantanamo Bay and its court system. But Khadr is the wrong symbol! If you're going to pick some- one to rally behind, find someone without blood on their hands. The U.S. court ruling is a reminder to everyone that no matter what you think about Khadr's experience in the legal system, his victims matter more. - Postmedia Network LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The News Record welcomes letters to the editor.
