Stolen vehicle recovered;
two facing charges
Huron County Ontario Pro-
vincial Police (OPP) officers
have laid charges against a male
and a female from Ashfield-Col-
borne-Wawanosh in connec-
tion to the theft of a Pontiac
Pursuit that was stolen from a
Goderich residence on Decem-
ber 7, 2014.
Just after 2:00 p.m. on January
14, 2015 Huron County Ontario
Provincial Police (OPP) officers
located the Pontiac Pursuit
parked on the side of Belfast
Road. Officers noted the vehicle
did not have attached licence
plates and it was partially block-
ing the eastbound lane. From a
distance officers watched a
female driver exit the vehicle
and begin to walk westbound on
Belfast Road. Upon arrival at the
scene officers checked the Vehi-
cle Identification Number (VIN)
on the vehicle and were able to
determine the vehicle was stolen
from Goderich.
Just down the road from the
stolen vehicle officers located
the female driver. She was
placed under arrest for Posses-
sion of Property Obtained by
Crime Over $5,000. Officers
searched the female driver
upon arrest and discovered she
was in possession of a quantity
of suspected methampheta-
mine. Officers then searched
the stolen vehicle and located a
front licence plate that was sto-
len from a vehicle located on
Marnoch Line in North Huron.
Further police investigation
revealed a male from Ashfield-
Colborne-Wawanosh also had
been in possession of the stolen
vehicle and stolen licence plate.
As a result, a 31 year old
woman from Ashfield-Col-
borne-Wawanosh has been
charged with Possession of
Property Obtained by Crime
Over $5,000, Possession of
Property Obtained by Crime
Under $5,000 and Possession of
a Schedule I Substance (Meth-
amphetamine). She remains in
custody with a court appear-
ance scheduled for January 19,
2015 at the Ontario Court of Jus-
tice - Goderich.
A 33 year old male from Ash-
field-Colborne-Wawanosh has
been charged with Possession
of Property Obtained by Crime
Over $5,000 and Possession of
Property Obtained by Crime
Under $5,000. He has been
released from custody with a
court appearance scheduled for
March 2, 2015 at the Ontario
Court of Justice - Goderich.
OPP disappointed by the number of
impaired charges during Festive RIDE
During the Ontario Provin-
cial Police (OPP) Festive RIDE
campaign from Nov. 24, 2014
to Jan. 2, OPP officers laid 593
impaired charges and issued
485 warn range suspensions.
When comparing the num-
bers to last year, the OPP is dis-
appointed to see little change
between this season's cam-
paign and the last one.
During the 2014-2015 Fes-
tive RIDE campaign, the OPP
laid 587 impaired charges and
issued 504 warn range suspen-
sions. Three people lost their
lives in impaired -related road
crashes over the 2014-2015
campaign.
OPP officers worked around
the clock during the campaign,
conducting more than 8,000
RIDE check stops throughout
the province. These enforce-
ment efforts alone are not
enough to eliminate impaired
driving and the threat it poses
to the lives of innocent people.
Locally, Huron County OPP
officers completed 260 R.I.D.E
checkpoints during the Festive
R.I.D.E campaign. Seventeen
drivers were charged with
impaired driving and two more
were charged with refusal to
provide a breath sample. Three
warn range suspensions were
served on drivers during the
campaign. Of note, three of the
drivers charged with impaired
driving were involved in motor
vehicle collisions.
Besides calling on all motor-
ists to refrain from driving
while impaired, the OPP
counts on all citizens to be val-
ued road safety partners and
intervene when they suspect
that someone is driving or
about to drive after consuming
alcohol or drugs.
"A driver who is impaired by
alcohol or drugs is a driver
who does not deserve to oper-
ate a motor vehicle alongside
drivers who are responsible,"
said OPP Deputy Commis-
sioner Brad Blair, provincial

commander, Traffic Safety and
Operational Support. "Public
intervention and continued
education by both the police
and valued community stake-
holders is the only way that we
as a society can continue to
reduce occurrences involving
impaired operation. Road
safety is a shared responsibility
and by working together we
can continue to make a
difference."
In the media release, OPP
officials thanked the many
Ontario drivers who did not
drive over the holidays while
impaired by drugs or alco-
hol. The OPP would also like to
thank those who volunteered
to be a designated driver,
offered to put a guest up for
the night or called them a cab
after they had been drinking,
called 9-1-1 to report an
impaired driver to police or
took some other action that
helped take an impaired driver
off the road over the holidays.
