St. Anne's co-op student reflects
on his time at the News Record
Jesse Le
Special to the News Record
In the time that I have
worked at the Clinton News
Record as a Co-op student,
I have learned a plethora of
skills needed for journalism
all while having one of the
best work experiences in
my life. I have learned what
duties a reporter must per-
form, and how these jobs
are carried out. My place-
ment has also given me the
opportunity to interact with
some of the kindest people
I know in a county I had
been somewhat distant
from before.
The first thing I learned
to do while working for the
Clinton News Record is
how to approach others for
an article. Social skills were
never a strong suit for me
so I was pretty much thrust
out of my element when
deciding to Co-op for a
local newspaper. The
thought of interacting with
strangers actually scared
me to the point I was
unwilling to take this
Co-op placement. How-
ever, after some convincing

from others I decided to take on the
new territory. Since I started working
I have learned to take initiative in
researching subjects for articles by
talking to a variety of different peo-
ple, from school staff to complete
strangers. This has made me much
more comfortable with stepping out
of my comfort zone and interacting
with others.
As for the things I learned to do that
a reporter specifically needs to know, I
have learned how to write various
types of articles and how to operate
placement equipment. First and fore-
most, I learned that news articles are
divided up into two categories: stories,
and cutlines. Stories are larger, more
detailed articles that may included a
photo and heading. On the other
hand, a cutline is just a photo and the
heading by themselves. A different
type of story that is written for the
Clinton News Record is the Early Files.
The Early Files are old articles from the
past five decades previously published
at the Clinton News Record and
republished for viewing in the present.

which is a collection of notable stories
and cutlines from the current year to
be published for the New Year. By
working at this placement, I have also
learned how to utilize a fax machine
and a camera.
Things I enjoyed about working for
the Clinton News Record were interact-
ing with my supervisor and coworkers.
These people have been kind, support-
ive, and understanding to the fact that I
was working in an unfamiliar environ-
ment and would likely have stumbles
before I would get used to the work of a
reporter. I was shown by the more
experienced workers how to properly
do my work and how to take responsi-
bility for myself as a journalist. I also
enjoyed having a Co-op partner, Shari
Evans, who was in a similar position as
I was. Together, we were able to com-
plete tasks such as the Year in Review
twice as fast and cover for each other
when work could not be completed
alone. However, what I loved most was
the work itself. I was able to research
and write stories and cutlines that I was
interested in while taking work at a
pace that suited myself. I was able to
learn so much about Huron County
through the Early Files, for example, I
learned about a local actress from years
ago who starred in Disney movies, cou-
ples that stayed together for over 60
years and the efforts that the local com-
munity has made to grow stronger.
I have grown as a person, not just a
worker, in my time as a Co-op student
for the Clinton News Record. I have
learned so much valuable information
about the county and myself. I am hon-
estly considering a future in journalism
but whether or not I go through with it
will take some time to determine.
It is because of the opportunities and
experience I have been given that
makes me so grateful towards the staff
at the Clinton News Record. I espe-
cially need to thank you, Tara Ostner,
for being such a kind and supportive
supervisor. I really don't think I can
fully repay you all with Bartliff's! Thank
you so much for opening up the Clin-
ton News Record to Shari and I and I
hope you will receive more interest
from Co-op students in the future!
From the bottom of my heart,
thank you.

Special to the News Record
I have learned a wide variety of
skills at my co-op placement at the
Clinton News Record.
Spell checking, grammar and
punctuation are the basics of what I
learned in English class at school.
But when working for the newspaper
I really had to watch and make sure I
didn't miss anything or type anything
incorrectly. If I happened to miss
something Tara Ostner (my boss)
would kindly tell me and help me to
improve or fix the mistake.
Acquiring names and spelling those
names correctly are also key things to
remember when working at the news-
paper. If I was taking pictures at a
school I always asked the principal if
that student was okay with me taking
their photo for the paper.
Learning the difference between cut
lines and stories was also important. If
I was writing a cut line I would usually
just include names and a brief
description of the event. However, sto-
ries are much longer, more detailed
and required more research.
I also learned to speak up when I
had a question. Given that I am very
shy, the newspaper has given me
confidence. It has also helped me to
understand that no question is a stu-
pid one especially when the answer
to that question will give me a better
understanding of what's going on.
I also met some lovely people at
my co-op placement including the
staff and St. Anne's co-op student,
Jesse Le. All of them have the same
passion as I do which is writing.
I hope that I will take what I have
learned at the Clinton News Record and
use it both at college and in my future.
LET'S ALL DO OUR PART!
