Closed road signs a
frustration for some
county councillors

Several county councillors
would like to see better com-
munication regarding the
reopening of roads during
winter storms.
Huron County director of
operations Steve Lund said it
is up to the discretion of the
OPP when roads are
reopened.
County Warden Paul Gow-
ing said during a bad day of
weather recently he saw bar-
ricades on Hwy. 86 taken
down at around 11 a.m. but
the notification of that the
road was now open wasn't
released until about 2 p.m.
"We've got to have some
type of process where they
(the OPP) notify the munici-
pality," Gowing said.
Some councillors also
questioned the locations of
signs, but David Frayne,
Deputy Mayor of South
Huron said the police usu-
ally place them where peo-
ple have the opportunity to
turn around.
Huron East Deputy
Mayor Joe Steffler said
when the road was recently
closed from Mitchell to
Seaforth it was a long
period of time before the
signs came down.

Some county councillors are concerned about closed road signs remaining in place for long periods of time after the roads have been
reopened during inclement weather.
"The issue isn't getting
the signs up, it's getting
them down," Steffler said.
Central Huron Mayor Jim
Ginn said there can be a
negative affect on local
businesses if barricades are
up despite roads being in
good condition.
Gowing said the local

United Way Campaign still
shy of hitting $1.17 Million
United Way Perth -Huron
is making one last push to try
to reach its' 2014 campaign
goal of $1.17 million. The
charity shared that funds
have continued to roll in, but
is still not enough to close
the anticipated gap of
$40,000.
We launched the cam-
paign with an ambitious goal
of $1.17 million, and that
goal is definitely within
reach," said Chief John Bates,
the 2014 campaign co-chair.
"We know that this year's
total will continue to grow as
people make donations
online or by phone and con-
tribute to workplace cam-
paigns running throughout
February."
Applications for funding
have increased, which
underscores "the impor-
tance of every donor, and
every dollar," said United
Way Perth -Huron's Execu-
tive Director Ryan Erb. The
charity supports nearly 50
agencies, projects and pro-
grams in Perth and Huron.
The high points of the
campaign included large
increases from workplaces
such as Hendrickson
Spring, The Huron Perth
Healthcare Alliance, Dyna-
Mig Inc and Curtis Wright.
The biggest challenges
included other workplace
campaigns dropping drasti-
cally and the Snow Bird
event in September, which
was affected significantly
by challenging weather.
Wayne Smith, campaign
co-chair. "Overall, it has
been a pretty successful
campaign, we just want to
be able to share as much as
possible with our agency
partners, as they are why
we campaign as passion-
ately as we do':
The campaign officially
ended December 15th,
2014 but the charity will
continue accepting dona-
tions until March 31, 2015.
