Bayfield Town Hall presents fourth annual cabaret
The Bayfield Town Hall was jumping on Friday night as it presented its fourth annual cabaret entitled, "The Great White North Cabaret - Eh?" The evening was hosted by Bob & Doug McKenzie and a
local cast performed songs from various Canadian artists.
The Old Clinton Post Office, 1904-66

With the end of the rail-
way mail service, all mail
had to be sorted in the
tightly confined space of
the Clinton Post Office.
More than one family had
to share a mailboxes in the
old building and the
Department of Public
Works now favoured func-
tionalism over style in
architecture. The present
Federal Building on King
Street replaced the old post
office on January 31, 1966.
Once the new post office
was built, the demolition
of the old one was
inevitable. Only a few
voices were raised in pro-
test. The ladies of the Clin-
tonian Club thought that
'it was too bad to have
such a fine old building
pulled down when it could
be put to so many good
uses.' A former Clinton
resident wrote in the paper
that, aside from the
churches, the old post
office was 'the only build-
ing that lends dignity of
appearance' to Clinton. Its
demolition, he argued,
would `destroy the appear-
ance' of the town.
Yet, overall, the reaction
of citizens to the

destruction of one of its
most important landmarks
was remarkably mute.
Without fuss or fanfare, the
stately old Clinton Post
Office was razed in mid -
1966. Decades later, its loss
is viewed as a major blow to
the town's architectural
and cultural heritage.
