211 Ontario - Make STOP in the name of health!
the right call
Huron County
and Ontario 211
Services ask
residents to 'make
the right call'
February llth is 211 Day
across North America. To
mark 211 Day, Huron
County Emergency Services
in partnership with Ontario
211 Services are asking resi-
dents to 'make the right call'
if they need help.
211 is the one stop Ontario
helpline for accessing com-
munity and social service
information to deal with
life's challenges. Call 2-1-1
for information on social
and health services, munici-
pal and Local Health Inte-
gration Network funded ser-
vices like housing,
employment and mental
health and addiction agen-
cies. Call 9-1-1 only for
threats or harm to a person
or property that require
police, fire or ambulance
services.
"When you dial 211 your
call is answered by trained
specialists who know our
community services and can
refer you to nearby support,"
said Jeff Horseman, Huron
County Deputy Chief of
Emergency Services. "Know-
ing the right number to call
will help residents find the
appropriate services for their
situation and will reduce
unnecessary calls to 911:'
211 is answered live, 24
hours a day, every day of the
year including holidays. Res-
idents are encouraged to call
2-1-1 for services like food
banks if they are hungry,
mental health support if they
are in crisis or if they need
the police but it is not an
emergency. 211's award-
winning telephone helpline
(2-1-1) and website
(www.211ontario.ca) pro-
vide a gateway to commu-
nity, social, non -clinical
health and related govern-
ment services.
Show some love to yourself
this month by becoming
smoke free.
"Smokers who quit decrease
their risk of having a heart
attack, a stroke and developing
certain types of cancers," says
Public Health Nurse Julie
Verch. "The Huron County
Health Unit can help you give
yourself the gift of health this
Valentine's."
As your partner in health,
the Huron County Health Unit
is offering a STOP (Smoking
Treatment for Ontario
Patients) workshop in Goder-
ich on February 26, 2015. The
STOP Program offers eligible
participants five weeks of cost-
free nicotine replacement ther-
apy as well as tips for making a
quit attempt successful.
Pre -registration is required
so please register early. For
more information, to see if you
are eligible to participate, and
to register for the workshop,

ultimately providing
REACH Huron with a vision
and short, medium and
long term goals for the
future.
Vel Evans and the Strate-
gic Equine Inc. (SEI) team
will be facilitating and
coordinating the REACH
strategic planning process.
"We're honoured to be
working with Central
Huron and REACH on the
development of a plan and
strategy for REACHing into
the future," says Vel Evans,
Strategic Equine. "It's not
our first rodeo, and one of
the important lessons
we've learned from working
with horse groups, educa-
tional facilities, govern-
ment organizations and
public stakeholders is that
feedback is the breakfast of
champions."
REACH Huron was
formed in 2009 as
a Non -Profit Charitable
Corporation. The Centre
operates as a "motel for
education" with its mission
to be an educational centre
of excellence encouraging
sustainability and growth
in rural Ontario, while
showcasing the equine and
agricultural industries.
With its partnership cre-
ated with Guelph Univer-
sity Ridgetown, Fanshawe
College, REACH is a unique
place to take in a weekend
event or receive training to
improve on or change your
career.
A public input session
has been scheduled for
February 12th, 2015 from
7:OOpm - 9:OOpm at REACH
Huron located at 169 Beech
Street in Clinton ON. Every-
one is welcome to attend
and provide input into the
future direction and vision
of REACH Huron.
Health Unit checking
student vaccination records
The Huron County Health
Unit has sent letters to stu-
dents who don't have a
complete immunization
record.
The Health Unit annually
reviews immunization
records for students attend-
ing school. Under the
Immunization of School
Pupils Act (ISPA) Ontario
students are required to be
vaccinated against several
infectious diseases in order
to attend school.
"Students may have
received these vaccines but
the Health Unit may not
have the records," says Pub-
lic Health Nurse Shirley
Chalmers. "Any vaccina-
tions you receive at your
doctor's office do not auto-
matically get shared with
the Health Unit."
If your family has received
a letter, the Health Unit asks
you to make sure the stu-
dent's shots are up to date.
Families should fill out the
rest of the notice and return
it to the Health Unit by
email, fax or phone.
This first immunization
notice will be followed up
by a second notice for any-
one who does not respond.
Ontario students must be
vaccinated against diphthe-
ria, tetanus, polio, measles,
mumps and rubella. Last
year vaccines for meningitis
and pertussis (whooping
cough) were added to the
list, as well as varicella
(chickenpox) vaccine for
students born in 2010 or
later.

tion or to ask questions
