SW CCAC care coordinators picket downtown Clinton
Tara Ostner
The Clinton News Record
At midnight on January 29
almost 3,000 health care
workers at various Commu-
nity Care Access Centre
(CCAC) across Ontario went
on strike. Almost one week
later health care workers
from the area demonstrated
their displeasure in a picket
downtown Clinton.
A CCAC focuses on three
main areas: optimizing an
individual's health and inde-
pendence, supporting an
individual through a health-
care transition (for example,
from hospital to home) and
providing care following an
illness or compromised
health status.
A CCAC care coordinator
is a regulated health profes-
sional, with expertise in
nursing, social work, occu-
pational therapy, physio-
therapy or speech therapy,
who works directly with
patients in hospitals, doc-
tor's offices, communities,
schools and in patients'
homes.
The CCAC health care
workers ultimately hope for
a 1.4 percent increase in
wages but, as Laurie Hen-
derson, a CCAC care coor-
dinator and site representa-
tive for Huron County,
stresses, this is "not for us."
Instead, she says, "we're
doing this for the profes-
sion. As care coordinators,
"we are the linchpins of
community care who
ensure that patients have
care upon leaving
hospitals."
The CCAC health care
workers' wages have been
frozen for two years and the
workers have been without
a contract since March 31,
2014.
According to Linda
Haslam -Stroud, president
of the Ontario Nurses Asso-
ciation, "This strike is about
dignity and respect and
also sends an important
message that these CCAC
CEOs can't give themselves

a large salary increase and
then unfairly compensate
the highly skilled, invalua-
ble front-line workers who
provide care."

"we don't wish to be out on
strike and it was inconceiv-
able to many of us who
have been nurses for 30
plus years but we were
forced to draw the line in
the sand."
