January 7
Province moves to make
buildings more accessible for
the disabled
The Ontario Building Code
will require that new or sub-
stantially renovated structures
include features such as visual
fire alarms starting Jan. 1.
The amendments to the
Ontario Building Code follow
from the 2005 Accessibility for
Ontarians with Disabilities Act
(AODA), which set a target date
of 2025 for an accessible
province.
January 14
Pickleball comes to Clinton
Central Huron Pickleball
Club plays pickleball out of the
Central Huron Secondary
School large auditorium.
Many of the members started
playing at Bayfield arena in the
summer and in the fall the courts
were covered with ice for hockey
and skating. This led them to
securing Tuesday evenings at
CHSS, purchasing equipment
and building membership.
January 21
School lockdown initiated
On January 12 an afternoon
school lockdown at Central
Huron Secondary School
(CHSS) was lifted after police
were able to confirm there was
not threat of danger posed to
the students or staff.
Just after 12:30 p.m. Huron
County Ontario Provincial
Police (OPP) officers responded
to the high school in Clinton
after police received informa-
tion that a male had been
observed entering the school
with aweapon.
Police immediately located
the suspect male standing out-
side of the school. No weapons
were located on the male.
Through further investigation
police were able to determine the
male was not in possession of a
weapon nor did he ever pose any
threat to the staff or students.
The school lockdown was
lifted just after 2 p.m.

RRHC begins new program
that will teach budgeting skills
For some people maintaining
a proper budget either isn't
thought of or, for various reasons,
is very difficult. The people at
Rural Response for Healthy Chil-
dren (RRHC), a parent support
agencylocated in Clinton whose
primary focus is child abuse pre-
vention recognize this and, for
this reason, they have introduced
a new program called Budget
Buddies.
The program seeks to provide
free and confidential, one-on-
one, practical, skills -based and
hands-on financial and house-
hold management to support
families and individuals within
Huron County.

New fire chief begins his duties
The former acting fire chief,
Dave Renner, began his first day
as a full-time fire chief, inspec-
tor and chief emergency man-
agement coordinator (CEMC)
at the Central Huron Fire
Department last month.
February 11
Healthcare workers picket
downtown Clinton
At midnight on January 29
almost 3,000 healthcare work-
ers at various Community Care
Access Centres (CCAC) across
Ontario went on strike. Almost
one week later, healthcare
workers from the area demon-
strated their displeasure in a
picket in downtown Clinton.
The CCAC healthcare work-
ers' wages have been frozen for
two years and the workers have
been without a contract since
March 31, 2014.
The closest South West CCAC
is in Seaforth and serves all of
Huron County.
February 18
Central Huron keeping40-acre
minimum for fann severances
County council has sup-
ported the wishes of Central
Huron to keep 40 acres as the
minimum for farmland sever-
ances in the municipality.
County planner Susanna
Reid presented a report on
amendments to Central
Huron's official plan. One of her
recommendations was that the
minimum severed farm size be
increased to 50 acres to be in
line with the rest of the county.
However, Central Huron
Mayor Jim Ginn said there are
farms in the former Goderich
and Stanley Townships that have
80 -acre lots. The motion, and
other amendments to the official
plan, were passed by council.

A cultural mix at Clinton
Public School
Clinton Public School (CPS)
has become somewhat of a cul-
tural mosaic in the last fewweeks.
The school has been host to
10 students and one teacher
from a Mexican private school,
Liceo del Valle de Toluca.
The program is facilitated by
Red Leaf Student Programs in
partnership with the Avon Mait-
land District School Board.

The students arrived on
Feb. 15 and will depart Can-
ada on March 7.
March 4
Cross -Canada traveling exhibit
is coming to Huron County
The communities of Exeter
and Goderich in Huron County
and surrounding areas are
invited to visit It's an Honour!, a
new traveling exhibit about the
Canadian Honours System that
is now making its way across
the country. It will journey to
schools, community centres,
special events and small towns
to connect with and inspire visi-
tors of all ages.
The exhibit showcases stories
of great Canadians who have
been recognized for their
extraordinary achievements
with national honours such as
the Order of Canada, Decora-
tions for Bravery and Military
Valour Decorations.

Huron County has a new
medical officer of health
Dr. Janice Owen will become
the permanent Acting MOH
with the Huron County Health
Unit as of April 7. MOHs are in
an acting capacity until they
complete the province's
requirements for specialized
public health courses.
The MOH position has been
filled with temporary MOH cov-
erage since November 2013.
March 18
Local student wins $36,000
scholarship to Queen's
Joe Fonseca has secured him-
self a place among elite company
at Queen's University prior to
even registering for his first
course at the prestigious school.
As part of the mail package
announcing he had been
awarded the scholarship, Fon-
seca also received an applica-
tion to the first in Canada pro-
gram, which allows a small
number of students to directly
gain entrance to medical school
after only two years in an
undergraduate program.

REACH celebrates Interna-
tional Drone Day
Aircraft enthusiasts gathered
at the REACH Huron Centre in
Cliton on March 14 as the cen-
tre hosted a special event to cel-
ebrate International Drone Day,
A day that focuses on educating
the public about the ways in
which drones are used to bene-
fit society.
120 teams worldwide took
part in International Drone Day
this year and Clinton was cho-
sen by organizers to represent
Ontario, Canada.

Young woman from Clinton
proves her hockey talent at
American university
Three years ago Brittany
Hymers, a young woman born
and raised in Clinton, received
a scholarship to play hockey at
Liberty University in Lynch-
burg, Virginia and this year has
been her greatest year yet.
Just last month Hymers'
hockey team, the Lady Flames,
defeated the University of
Miami in a 4-1 victory and won
the 2015 National Champions
title. Furthermore, Hymers, a
defense player, received the
"3rd star" of the National
Championship Gold game.

Seaforth student headlines
autism awareness celebration
Seaforth Public School played
host to a deeply personal celebra-
tion for World Autism Awareness
Day Thursday, featuring n
address from one of its own stu-
dents who launched an educa-
tional campaign after being told
he had been diagnosed with the
developmental disorder.
Morgan Mason, originally
eyeing a modest goal of $750,
has managed to raise over
$1,000.

Central Huron at third step in
the process to become a nuclear
waste site
Central Huron is currently at
step three of nine in the plan to
determine whether it is a suita-
ble site for Canada's nuclear
waste.
April 22
MP Ben Lobb announces
funding for Bayfield Harbour
improvements
MP for Huron -Bruce, Ben
Lobb, announced last Thursday
the Government of Canada's plan
to provide funding to improve the
Bayfield Harbour. The announce-
ment comes from long-standing
safetyissues with the north pier.
April 29
CO detectors donated to Cen-
tral Huron and Bluewater
The Insurance Bureau of Can-
ada donated 96 carbon monox-
ide detectors to Central Huron
Fire Hall last Friday. The effort
was to help residents follow the
mandatory deadline ofApri115 to
have working carbon monoxide
detector in each home.

Innovation and inspiration
for students atHPCDSB summit
Innovate, inspire and net-
work were the themes of last
week's learning summits at St.
Michael's and St. Anne's.
Organized by the Huron -Perth
Catholic District School Board,
this year's summits were the first
of its kind. Students representing
all Catholic elementaryschools in
Huron were in attendance last
Tuesday at St Anne's.
The summit was created to
bring students together to learn
about innovation and technol-
ogy. Students were then encour-
aged to bring back what they
leamed to their own classrooms.
