Tanya Thompson is a mother
of two teenage boys and Clin-
ton homeowner who dreamed
of becoming a nurse. In 2005
while working as a Dialysis
Technician in London, she
enrolled in the first Practical

Seaforth through Georgian Col-
lege. Thompson sites Program
Manager of HealthKick, Laura
Overholt along with Barb Car-
rier who was the Georgian Col-
lege liaison at that time, as key
to her obtaining a higher edu-
cation rurally, stating both
family and financial obligations
would have made it impossible
for her to attend school
full-time.
After graduation in 2009 as
a Registered Practical Nurse
(RPN), Thompson continued
her education through Cen-
tennial College and Ryerson
University, which held classes
in Perth County, located at
Stratford General Hospital.
Thompson reports having the
Registered Nurse (RN) and
Bachelor of Science in nursing
degree (BScN) program in
Stratford allowed her to main-
tain employment, while
attending night classes. She
adds another advantage to
taking her education locally;
she was able to participate in

Overall, Thompson, now
with RPN, RN, BScN behind
her name, believes advancing
one's education is rewarding,
and looks for the positives in
every opportunity and chal-
lenge along the way. Thomp-
son has accepted a teaching
position with Georgian Col-
lege instructing in the Practi-
cal Nursing program held
locally in Seaforth.
HealthKick (a rural health-
care human resources project
in Huron County) and its part-
nership with Georgian Col-
lege established the Practical
Nursing Program in 2005 in
Seaforth. Tanya was among
the students in that very first
class.
"We are pleased to have
helped to make Tanya's
dreams come true:' says Laura
Overholt, HealthKick Project
Manager. "Tanya has always
kept me informed of her pro-
gress towards her goals and
has been very supportive of
HealthKick's role. I am very
proud of her and her determi-
nation. She is an excellent
example of the success we
have seen in our local people
engaging in the pursuit of
healthcare careers and com-
ing full circle to take on men-
torship and leadership roles
for our next generation of
healthcare workers and stu-
dents. Congratulations to
Tanya for all her success and
best wishes for her very bright
future:'
