Gray is founder of MOTORESS, the global online women's motorcy- cling magazine and Interna- tional Female Ride Day. Gray's goal is to ride around Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, covering the minimum 1610 kilometres (1000 miles) distance within 24 hours and achieve the official Iron Butt Association certification. Her ride start and finish will take place in Clinton from its Hugh Hawk- ins Park. The park was named in honour and mem- ory of her grandfather. Part of the criteria estab- lished by the IBA on the Lake Huron 1000 is that the route must begin and end in the same location. Gray decided this was the perfect opportu- nity to include her grandfa- ther's park. Hugh R. Hawkins was well known in the community. He was a businessman run- ning his own heating and plumbing company from his hardware store. He was an avid sportsman and did two terms as president of the Western Ontario Athletic Association. "It's certainly significant weaving Clinton and my heritage into my personal motorsport goals. It'll be a delightful feeling on the 27th as I sit on my motor- cycle, under the arch of bearing my grandfather's name, preparing for my ride. And, providing I suc- ceed, an equally meaning- ful finish. I was too young to know him when he passed away. Though, with each visit to Clinton during former family out- ings or with my mother, his only daughter, I'm privy to engaging stories from those who knew him. Integrating my passion for motorcycling and this part of my heritage allows me to preserve a bond to this small by special commu- nity," said Gray. Not new to competitive motorsports or long distance riding, Gray further advo- cates for exploring Ontario's roads by motorcycle. "Lake Huron's coastal towns are favourites of mine. I spent many summers here as a young girl. The area is great to explore by motorcy- cle and you can't beat Lake Huron's renowned spectacu- lar sunsets," said Gray. Central Huron facilities manager, Steve Campbell, will be the official witness of Gray's ride start and finish. Campbell has a long family history in Clinton and recalls being a part of the park's inauguration. Endurance motorcycle riding can be seen as a form of motorsport itself and a personal achievement. The IBA are dedicated to safe, long distance motorcycle riding. It is based in the United States and has over 50,000 members throughout the globe.
