With the increased amount of knowledge, information and technol- ogy (K.I.T.) playing a role in students' education today, the idea for the K.I.T. card was born. AMDSB technology coach Leigh Cassell brought forward the idea in early April. Through coordination of the public libraries serving students of the AMSDB, this Sep- tember will see all stu- dents from K-12 receive a library card registration form. Once completed, students will receive their own public library card that can be used during class instruction, as well as on students' own time, to access all of the resources the library has to offer. "Leigh is a phenomenal educator who is always looking for ways to enrich students' learning opportu- nities. When she approached us about part- nering to give every single AMDSB student a library card, we were eager to begin the coordination between the Huron County Library as well as the five Perth Libraries to make this project happen," said Beth Rumble, branch services librarian, Huron County Library. "Through regular outreach activities and community involvement we are able to reach a seg- ment of the school -aged population. This program provides an all-encompass- ing scope that really speaks to our values of equitable access, literacy and lifelong learning, and community focus. We are enthusiastic about the potential benefits our community will see as a result of this initiative." With the roll out of the Next Generation Learning Program, an increasing number of AMDSB stu- dents have their own per- sonal iPad. Additionally, most schools have multiple sets of iPads or Netbooks for classroom use. Having a public library card will give students access to the thou- sands of eBooks The Clinton Family Health Team is offering an eight-week course on Mindfulness Meditation This course will take place at the Clinton Health Centre Wednesdays at 2:30 pm and begins Wednesday September 16th, You will learn skills to help alleviate symptoms of stress and distress! To register or for more information contact Julie Talbot MSW, RSW at 519-482-3000 and Audiobooks that the libraries offer, free of charge. In addition, a library card provides access to other eResources for online research, informa- tion or fun. Libraries are also hoping to see an increase in patron traffic at their branches as students explore the physical collec- tion that is available. To kick off the program, students with existing cards who may have accumu- lated fines will be given a one-time forgiveness of all overdue fines. Students who have a card but have lost it will be given a new card free of charge. Moving forward, all new students and those enter- ing junior kindergarten will receive a registration form at the beginning of the school year. "I am very proud to be a part of this initiative that will provide all AMDSB students access to the wealth of resources avail- able from our public libraries," Cassell said. Huron County's 10 municipal partners have launched a collaborative economic development strategic planning process in partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. The strategic planning process launched on August 10, 2015 and will continue through the month of October at which point municipal staff will look to develop workplans and budgets to help implement short and long term projects and goals. This process will seek to dovetail each municipal economic development strategic plan in an effort to address gaps, seek out opportunities for collaboration and consolidation, share best practices and develop effective and streamlined performance measurement techniques. Each of the following municipalities has appointed a five -person core team to work through this process: • Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh • Bluewater • Central Huron • County of Huron • Goderich • Howick • Huron East • Morris-Turnberry • North Huron • South Huron We want to hear your voice! Members of the community are encouraged to participate in this process. Each municipal core team must develop a strategic planning committee that they consult throughout this process. If you have ideas about how we can strengthen and grow Huron County's economy and would like to participate on a municipal strategic planning committee please email: sandra.mccann@ontario.ca • 519-482-3333
