Well, one of those pictures was Harold H. Or perhaps you saw that huge horse picture that adorned the wall in the office of Bill Counter of former Counter Building Supplies in Clitnon. Well that horse was Harold H who was owned by John Swarts who was Counter's grandfather. John Swarts also owned the Queens Hotel in Wingham. The picture of Harold H and his driver, Al Proctor, in Counter's office was taken on October 1, 1901 when Harold H won a mile race at Terre Haute, Indianna to set a world record of 2:04. In that race Harold H paced the third quarter in 28 and three quarters and came home in 30 seconds. Quite a mile. After that Harold H returned to Wingham from a very successful tour of the United States. Local sports organized a fitting parade for Harold H, the conquering hero. The Lucknow Band headed theprocession from the Grand Trunk Station down the main street and up the Diagonal Road to his sta- ble. The horse, Harold H (Canada's fastest horse at that time) wore a collar of roses. Crowds lined the streets a cheer the champion ho had set the record of 2:04. A big celebration was held that night - what a party. The following Sunday, Rev. Hobbs of the Methodist Church preached a fire and brimstone sermon on the evils of honouring a horse. Harold H raced in 46 events during his career including clashes with the immortal Dan Patch. Most of these events had three or more races per day. These events required a total of 145 heats and Harold H finished in the first three in 126 of them. That included 87 heats he won, 27 seconds and 12 thirds, which translated to a success of 86 per cent, no worse than third. He raced at 10 tracks in Ontario and Manitoba and in 11 states in the USA stretching from Brooklyn, New York to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His USA starts included Grand Circuit events and appear- ance at several metropolitan tracks like Detroit, Cleveland, Syracuse, Lexington and Columbus, Ohio. He was shipped from race to race by rail so he collected a lot of rail miles. After a matched race at Windsor against the great Dan Patch, John Swartssold his great pacer, Harold H, to the McLaren boys of Winnipeg for $8,000. Harold H went on to reduce his lifetime record to 2:03 and three quarters at Gatesburg, Illonois. On August 5, more than 100 years after his career ended, Harold H was finally honoured with racing's top accolade, a hall of fame induction into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame. A long overdue honour - well done Harold H. uwiun & SEAFORTH 2uio PHONF Raw mei off' kier Nefk r}. ws Record 53 ALBERT ST., CLINTON 519-482-3443 OR FAX: 519-482-7341 Do we have yor number?
