The club is offering a two- week trial starting September 14. Laura Broadley Clinton News Record For over 25 years the Huron Hurricanes have been making waves in Huron County. As the season starts, the Hur- ricanes Aquatic Club is inviting potential new members to join for a two-week free trial starting on September 14. It is an opportunity for peo- ple to experience what it is like to be Hurricane. Head coach, Kristy Lyon, said it is not a try- out but rather a chance for the public to get a feel for the club. "It's not really a trial to see if you're good enough, it's a trial to see if you like what we're offering. There's no cuts, any- one who wants to join can join, said Lyon. Practices are in two different locations throughout the week. The youth program runs from ages six all the way up until the children go to univer- sity. The team is open to people with different skill levels but they have to be able to swim one length of the pool, said Lyon. The coaches train athletes in all four competitive strokes, which includes butterfly, back- stroke, ackstroke, breaststroke and free- style, as well as dives and turns. There are competitive and non-competitive options with five different groups in the pro- gram: Novice, junior, interme- diate, advanced and elite. This season the Hurricanes will be hosting four free in- house competitions in Vanastra. "They're a great starting place for anyone who wants to see if they like racing," said Lyon. The competitive swimmers go to meets about once a month, going to competitions across Ontario. The season runs from Sep- tember to May and the team is always acceptingnewmembers. The club also offers an adult master class with Wednesday and Saturday mornings swim times in Goderich and Monday nights in Vanastra. The adult pro- gram offers optional member- ships on each workout meaning that people can signup for as little or as many classes astheywant Goderich-only members are required to have YMCA memberships. If anyone knows what they're talking about it's Lyon. It's her fourth season with the Hurri- canes and she has brought a lot of experience with her. Lyon started her swim career with the Hurricanes in the early 1990s. She went to the Com- monwealth Games in 1998 and in 2002. She was also a member of the Canadian national team from 1998 through to 2004. For more information go to www.huron-hurricanes.com, email swimcoachkristy@gmail. com or call 519-955-1784.
