When Lobb learned that a nuclear waste repository was needed somewhere in Can- ada, she wanted to learn R o < more. It is especially relevant because Central Huron is still one of the considered host communities but Lobb said she wanted to learn more about it either way. Q In early June of this year, g D Lobb attended the Canadian rzy Nuclear Society's annual conference. The conference, in its 35th year, is meant to provide a way for interested parties to converge and dis- cuss views and newest infor- mation relating to nuclear science and technology. In 2012 Lobb attended the International Conference on Geological Repositories, 0 e 6-, which had representation „o from every country that ° deals with nuclear waste. From her research and experience at the confer- ences Lobb wants to urge S that something needs to be done. e Z = We're creating the nuclear waste and we better take care of it, Lobb explained. "It's a choice of what we do but we are creating waste and it is multiplying and we're not taking care of it," said Lobb. The waste is currently in Kincardine but through her research, Lobb said she 8 2015 SUPER DUTY IIMErorip— THE ALL-NEW 2015 F-150 THE ALL-NEW 2015 EDGE Go Further 2 s thinks it belongs somewhere else for the long term and so far the only viable option is a deep repository. Although many countries throughout the world are fol- lowing the deep repository model, none have actually completed the process. The conferences never dealt with where the Cana- dian repository would go and Lobb doesn't think it will end up in Central Huron. Lobb said there is a sense of comfort that nuclear waste, under current guide- lines, is not shipped across borders. She specifically points to the United States, which, as of 2012, has more than five times the number of active reactors. "I don't have much faith in the federal government to protect us, unfortunately," said Lobb. Putting the repository far away from where people live seems ideal but part of the problem is the transporta- tion between sites. Minimiz- ing transportation distance is key, said Lobb. "You never expect an acci- dent. You hope there never will be but you never know," said Lobb. So far, Lobb is only con- vinced that something needs to be done. For her to agree with the deep repository model, first, the safety factor will be paramount. Another factor is the location, which will alter the region forever, said Lobb. clintonnewsrecord.com S* At The Bruce County Heritage Farm Show * August 14,15,16 Paisley Featuring COCKSHUTT ((csiriusxrn»)) Available most new Ford vehicles with 6 -month pre -paid subscription A Family Fun Event!
