Clinton Cougars going out on top

The Clinton Cougars
Cheerleading team won first
place at the National Cheer
Championships for the Senior
Level 2 section last weekend
in Brampton, Ontario. It was a
bittersweet win for the girls
and their coaches as the team
is folding after this season.
"That's why it meant so
much," said Cougars coach,
Shell LeBlanc. The team
was founded 12 years ago
after the Avon Maitland
District School Board took
cheerleading out of its
schools. "The girls begged
us to create a team,"
remembers LeBlanc.
It was a difficult decision
for the coaches but running
the non-profit club was get-
ting to be too much. All the
coaches are volunteers with
full-time jobs as the club
only charged for competi-
tion and gym fees.
Along with the team win,
for the second time Natasha
Hickey won first place in the
Individual Routine competi-
tion and Stacy Masse and
Olivia McCarter took home
first place in the Duo Rou-
tine competition.
The Cougars will leave
behind a legacy. The club
won first place at NCC last
year and have taken home a
second and third place win
in the last five years.
