The Bayfield River Valley
Trails Association led a "Litter
Walk" last Wednesday after-
noon in honour of Earth Day.
Despite the cold weather
approximately 50 people
signed up to take part in the
event to clean up the streets
and trails of Bayfield.
This was the first time the
event was held but organizers
believe that it is the responsi-
bility of the citizens to clean
and maintain the streets. Par-
ticipants cleaned up over 20
bags of garbage and even a
few old tires.
"We wanted to take our
motto one step further," said
co-organizer Helen
Varekamp.
The motivation for the
event was to get the village
clean but also to raise aware-
ness of how much garbage is
out there on any given day.
Varekamp wants people to
realize that everyone has a
responsibility on any day to
pick up garbage. Not only
does garbage collect on the
streets because people litter
but it also comes from gar-
bage that isn't secured prop-
erly in bins.
"Why can't we as citizens
take care of our own?" said
Varekamp. She doesn't want
to wait for the town or anyone

else to do it. She calls upon the
citizens to clean on a regular
basis so that future genera-
tions can enjoy the trails too.
The Bayfield River Valley
Trails consists of three trails in
Bayfield; Woodland Trail,
Heritage Trail and Sawmill
Trail. There is also the Mavis
Trail and Taylor trail located in
the Vama area. The trails cross
private land that owners have
allowed for use by the public
so it is imperative that users
are conscious of their trail
footprint in order to maintain
a good relationship.
The Bayfield trail system
attracts people from all over
the province. The hikes differ
in length from 1 to 5 kilome-
tres and have varying degrees
of difficulty. The Association
has also trained hike leaders
to take people out onto the
trails. There will be two hiking
events every month in the
summer.
