Sugar beet growers are dissatisfied
this year. Returns are not as good as
they should be. A number have been
figuring up what they made and I have
been told that sugar beets were sold at
the rate of about. 7 meta for 60 lbs.,
while mangolds have sold at 9 cents and
termites at 8 eente. Some growers have
not made wages and ger nothing for use
of their land. We have something to
learn yet about beet growing. We hope
farmers will not he discouraged, but try
again.
WALTON.
Thursday forenoon, Deo. 13th, the call
of the Pilaster came to Mrs. S. J. Barr.
ows, and she triumphantly bade adieu to
her dear ones in the hope of a happy re-
union bye and bye. She was conscious
to the last and oil various ocoaeions ex-
pressed her willingness to depart. Cause
of death was general debility. Her hus-
band died a year ago last March in his
72nd year. Mrs. Barrow's maiden name
was Sarah Bentley and she was born
near Thirsk, Yorkshire, England. At
the age of nine years she removed from
her native home to Toronto township.
Here she lived with her parents for about
four years when they moved to the town-
ship of Blanshard in the vicinity of Kirk -
ton where she was united in marriage
(Dec. 23rd.,1858) with her late husband,
Simeon J. Barrows. They then settled
in the township of Ueborne, one mile
from the village of Farquhar, where
they resided for ten years. Removing
thence to the township of McKillop they
settled in the unbroken forest East of
Leadbury and cleared for thmselves and
family a good farm where they resided
for 21 years. After disposing of the old
farm on the Leadbury line Mr. Barrows
parohased the farm of Stephen Lamb on
the boundary West of Walton where
they resided nearly 13 years and from
which they retired nearly 4 years ago to
live in the village of eyehole
WEST 'iVAWANOSid.
The annual financial statement of
the township has been published and
makes a very good showing for the pre-
sale council. The year commenced
with a deb; of $2,000; this has been wip-
ed out, and with all the current expendi-
tures met and every account against the
township paid, including the canny rate
there is now a balance of about S 0 to
the good. It looks as if the Mum i af-
fairs of the township had been vie e well
handled during the year, and it is to be
hoped that the electors will chose le isely
at the coming election and return men
who will keep the townshie's finances
on a sound ba is.
A very pleasant event took place at
