HomeMy WebLinkAboutClinton News Record, 2015-04-29, Page 7Wednesday, April 29, 2015 • News Record 7 Ringette champs bring it home from the East coast Michele Hodgert Special to the News Record The Exeter/Seaforth U19A Ringette have just completed the season of alife time winning the top prize of W' Ringette at the Eastem Canadian Ringette Championship winning 7-2 over PEI. The team represented Ontario as "Team 0" and included a trip to Moncton, New Brunswick for the compe- tition. In round robin play Team O finished undefeated with 5-0 and eamed a bye to the final. The Team 0 arrived in Moncton, NewBrunswickearly Wednesday and spent the day touring the local attractions like Hopewell Rock, Fundy National park and Magnetic Hill for team photo options. Thursday was opening ceremonies. In game one, Nova Scotia the first team to meet the bright red Team O. The locals had no mercy knowing that they needed a seven goal spread if it was possible and dominated winning 8-0. Team 0 started the charge five minutes in and didn't look back. The first half action saw Avery Wedow net- ting two, while Amanda Hodg- ert and Emily Neubrand each got singles. Second half had Wedow with her game on and got three more and Hodgert added the final one. Amanda Verbeke 2, Claire Rocher, Kim Alcock 4, Lindsay Govers 3. Amy Alcock, Claire Hes- selwood, Neubrand all had assists. Kyrstin Krainz recorded her first shutout of the touma- mentwith 15 saves. In game two, Team 0 again dominated the physical game against Quebec 2 winning 9-1. Scoring came from HaileyWiet- ersen, Govers, Wedow 2, Ver- beke 2, Neubrand, Hodgert, Rocher. Game three was an unex- pected 9-0 win over Quebec 1. Krainz made 11 saves for the shutout. Goals were scored by Govers, Wedow 2, Neubrand 3, Verbeke 2, and Wietersen. Help with the scoring Amy Alcock 4, Wedow 3, Verbeke, Hennessy, and Govers. Both fast paced and a chal- lenge, the 5-1 New Brunswick game was a great test in game four. AmyAlcockwas success- ful on 2 shoots, Verbeke, Hodg- ert, Neubrand each added sin- gles. Helpers came from Wedow, Rocher, Neubrand 2, Wietersen, Govers, Verbeke, and Hodgert. Krainz made 22 saves. This fifth game had Hodgert netting two early with Wedow and Verbeke assisting. Rocher, Wedow, and Neubrand each added one before the ended of the first with Team 0 up 5-2. The second found the locals on the defence most of the time with the fast skating PEI team trying everything to break the defence. Krainz made 25 saves for the 5-4 end to end win. Team 0 would learn after the semi final that it would PEI in the final with them. The championship game started very similar to the round robin match up in game five. Hodg- ert netted the first two of the game with Neubrand, Rocher, Wedow, and Amy Alcock get- ting assists. PEI added one to end the half 2-1. Amy Alcock scored the next two goals with Hodgert, Verbeke, Rocher, and Govers setting up the plays. Again PEI jump back in the game making it 4-2 with 11 minutes to go. The lead was never comfortable knowing the speed and skill of the PEI players. The game continued to be physical and Team 0 capitalized on a couple power plays. Wedow scored with Hodgert and Verbeke assisting on a two-man advantage. Amy Alcock and Govers set Hodgert up for her third of the game and Rocher slammed the Door on PEI on a great Wedow pass. As the clock ran the final minute the fans start to cheer. This team finishes the 2015 season with 59 wins, five losses and three ties. They won the U19A provincial title and all four tournaments they played in.
