Race car driver Sam Schmidt always dreamed of driving the track at Long Beach California. Sunday that dream came true but not the way he expected. Several years ago Sam was in a race accident and has been a quadriplegic since. But Sunday he drove the track prior to the Toyota Grand Prix of California IRL race. Technicians have built the car he drove using his head and his voice. It looked like sensors were attached to his headgear over which he had control for a successful lap around the road course. As I've remarked before, the advances in equipment and manufacture that go into the building and driving of these race cars eventually find their way to our highway cars. It will be interesting to see how Sam's experience helps other drivers regain a measure of independence. Incidentally Scott Dixon won that race for the first time.
