Thompson says cap and trade system will amount to more problems
Postmedia Network
Ontario Liberal cap -and -
trade system would amount
to nothing more than the
government putting its giant
hand even deeper into tax-
payers' pockets, Progressive
Conservative MPP Lisa
Thompson says.
"They are looking at an
initiative that's going to be
prove to be taxing on
Ontarians," Thompson

warned Monday. "We're
going to see the price of
everything from groceries
to fuel to heat increasing
because of a price on car-
bon that the Liberals are
bringing in only to try and
generate revenue to cover
their deficit."
The Ministry of Environ-
ment would not comment
on a news report that a cap -
and -trade system would be
announced shortly but did
1 IR
refer to a letter signed by
business leaders in support
of such a plan.
Environment Minister
Glen Murray, who's respon-
sible for his government's
response to climate change,
announced in February that
he was launching province -
wide consultations on a car-
bon -pricing plan that would
encourage businesses to
lower their greenhouse gas
emissions.
"There is no single issue
that presents a greater threat
to humanity and to our
future and at the same time,
there is no single issue that
offers such promise for job
growth, for reinvestment and
for a stronger economy,"
Murray said at the time.
The Ontario government
has hardly had time to
absorb the results of those
consultations and yet
appears poised to usher in a
cap -and -trade system, or
some other carbon pricing,
Thompson said.
"I am concerned that
they're using everybody's
sincere interest in doing
something positive for the
environment," she said.
"It's so frustrating because
I think they've duped the
public. There's no way
they have had a chance to
go through all of the con- Huron -Bruce MPP Lisa
sultation notes." Thompson
