Over the past seven months, 36 talented teens have been working along- side Goderich District Colle- giate Institute to co -host this year's District Sears Drama Festival. In addition, with the assistance of teacher Ms. Brennan -Yeo, volunteers Helen VanBakel, Warren Robinson, and Melissa Hof- stede (chaplain), these stu- dents also put together two plays for the competition. The first play, Olympia- ganza, was written by Don Zolidis, performed with per- mission of Playscripts Inc, and student directed by Genevieve Pitre. It was a raucous comedy that left the audience crying with laughter. The second play was a classic, "The Only Jeal- ously of Emer", written by Yeats and adapted by Warren Robinson. It was an intense drama that utilized masks, dance and live music. Both pieces showed well at Sears and we received five out of the 18 awards given at the festival. Ten plays and nine schools were involved in the event, so we were very proud of the achievements of the students. Big congrats and shout out Pictured here (from left to right) are Courtney Conway, Elena McCue, Eric Steele, Mrs. Crystal Brennen -Yeo, Genevieve Pitre, Courtney Groot, Rebecca Lowey. (Not pictured: Kyle Jandl) goes to Genevieve Pitre, Elena McCue and Courtney Groot for their Award of Excellence for ensemble work directing and stage managing Olympi- aganza. Rebecca Lowey won an Award of Excellence for her acting in both Olympia- ganza and The Jealousy of Emer. Eric Steele won an Award of Merit for acting in both shows. Courtney Con- way won an Award of Merit for her design work and cos- tuming in both plays. And finally, Kyle Jandl won an Award of Merit for his talents as an actor on stage in Olympiaganza. As well, a committee member for the Southern Ontario Youth Theatre Festi- val, viewed over 200 plays in and out of the Sears circuit. Of those plays, only 24 plays were short listed to present at the SOYTF Ontario Show- case in May. St. Anne's play, Olympiaganza" was hon- oured to be chosen as one of the 24! Therefore, students from both plays will be attending the festival in Windsor to celebrate their achievements alongside many other students from all over Ontario. They will par- ticipate in a number of won- derful workshops overseen by some of the best profes- sionals in the many fields of theatrical acting, design, technology, directing, light- ing, dance, stage combat and many more! If you would like a chance to view The Only Jealousy of Emer, it will be presented at the Goderich Celtic Festival this coming summer.
