Popular Clinton Minor Baseball
Camp returning for third year
Former Toronto Blue Jay Jesse
Barfield one of head instructors
The sweet sounds of the
crack of the bat and the ball
hitting the glove will be
returning to Clinton this
summer.
Huron -Bruce MP Ben Lobb
and Clinton Minor Baseball
are working together to
organize the third annual
Clinton Minor Baseball
Camp, a two-day event
focused on youth baseball
instruction.
This year former Toronto
Blue Jay and two-time Golden
Glove winner Jesse Barfield
will be headlining the
instructors for the two-day
baseball camp. Barfield
played nine of his 12 Major
League Baseball seasons with
the Toronto Blue Jays. He led
the American League in
home runs in 1986 and
played in the 1986 all-star
game. Barfield hit 241 career
home runs and was consid-
ered to have one of the best
outfield arms in baseball his-
tory. Also joining Barfield is
NCAA head baseball coach
Mark Brew.
Brew is in his ninth season
as head coach of the Lee Uni-
versity Flames. He directed
his first seven Lee teams to
the NAIA College World
Series before leading the
transition to NCAA Division
II and the Gulf South Confer-
ence last season. He has been
named conference Coach of
the Year twice (2008 and
2010) and has been named
Region Coach of the Year six
times (2008 to 2013). In 2008
he was named National
Coach of the Year. "We look
forward to working with Jesse
Barfield and Mark Brew. This
is an exciting event for grass-
roots baseball in Huron
County. Last year kids from
six different counties
attended the camp," said
Lobb. "I can't thank the
Municipality of Central
Huron and the local business
community enough; they
continue to support this

event to make it affordable
for everyone," This year's
camp will run July 13 and July
14 at the Clinton Community
Ball Park. It is open to boys
and girls, ages eight to 18.
Individuals can register

The cost is $60 and space is
limited so organizers advise
interested parties to register

Council declines financial
support for charter challenge

A request for financial support
towards a charter challenge of the
province's wind turbine approval
process was denied by Central
Huron council.
The request came from SWEAR (Safe
Wind Energy for All Residents), which
is one of three organizations involved in
the court case.
Council voted down the request,
which Coun. Alex Westerhout was
strongly in favour of.
"We are an unwilling host," Wester-
hout said. "It's time to put our money
where our mouth is."
While SWEAR did not make a spe-
cific request, it was suggested $1,000
would be acceptable.
Deputy Mayor Dave Jewitt spoke
against providing financial support.
"It is a very important court case. But
I feel that if someone wants to make a
donation it doesn't necessarily have to
come from the municipality," he said.
"I'd look at it as lost money, I appreciate
the effort (they are making) but I don't
think it will be successful:'
Central Huron budget to be finalized on April 20

Central Huron council has instructed
staff to lower the municipality's tax rate
for the 2015 budget.
At the April 7 council meeting, Cen-
tral Huron director of finance Terri Rau
presented five draft budget scenarios to
council, out of which they chose a 2.34
per cent tax rate increase.
Coupled with decreases of 3.28 per
cent and 3.94 per cent respectively in
the county and school board tax
rates, under this scenario the consol-
idated tax rate would decrease by
0.82 per cent.
Overall this scenario would reflect a
7.97 per cent increase of the municipal
tax levy, reflecting $427,000 in addi-
tional revenue for Central Huron.
It should be noted these were draft
budget discussions and the final
approval for the 2015 budget will take
place at a public meeting on April 20.
Under the chosen scenario, the
municipality will fund $216,000 for
municipal drain work equally from tax-
ation and the tax stabilization reserve.
Some of the major capital projects in
the draft budget include $421,875 for
the resurfacing of Bayfield River Road,
$345,000 for resurfacing of Black's Point
Road and $270,000 for resurfacing of
Hullett-McKillop Road.
As well, $236,617 was been budgeted
for the replacement of Burns Line
Bridge, while almost $2 million has
been earmarked for upgrades and new
equipment at one of the municipality's
sewage treatment plants.
Rau told council that Central Huron's
Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund
(OMPF) allocations were down
$243,000 to $598,000 and there will be
more cuts in funding next year.
Central Huron Mayor Jim Ginn said
he was "very uncomfortable" with any
type of consolidated budget increase
over two per cent.
He said he was happy with the
municipality's "aggressive capital plan."
"I don't mind spending some of the
money we have," Ginn said after hear-
ing Central Huron has about $4 million
in reserves at this point.
The budget is subject to final
approval from Central Huron council.
