Just last month Hymers' hockey team, the Lady Flames, defeated the University of Miami in a 4-1 victory and won the 2015 National Champions title. Furthermore, in addition to claiming the prestig- ious title, Hymers, a defense player, received the "3rd star" of the National Championship Gold Contributed photos Brittany Hymers. game. As Hymers states, "I wasn't expecting the award at all. It came as a bit of a shock." The award came as no surprise to her coach, Paul Bloomfield, however. As Bloomfield explains, Hymers is an awesome player who played her heart out in the national tournament. "She has been my go to defense player this year," he explains. Hymers began playing hockey at the age of four. She played hockey at pre -tyke, tyke and nov- ice levels at the BCH centres and then went on to play for the Huron -Perth Lakers AAA team, the London Devillettes, the Strathroy Bluewater Hawks, a team that her dad, Brad, helped coach, and the Saugeen Maitland AA team. Then, in 2012, Hymers received and accepted the schol- arship to Liberty University. She also attended Clinton Pub- lic School and St. Anne's Catholic Secondary School where she played hockey as well. Throughout her life Hymers' mother, Darlene Hymers, her father, Brad Hymers, and her sib- lings, Courtney and Carson, have encouraged her to pursue her passion in hockey. As Hymers' mother puts it, "both Brittany's dad, who has played and coached hockey for years, as well as myself have been active supporters of Brittany's hockey career and choices" Choosing to attend the Ameri- can university is clearly a choice that Hymers herself is happy she made. While she was homesick during her first year and found adjusting to university life "a bit terrifying," Hymers says that in her second year she gained more confidence and independence. Her third year, she describes, has been "the best so far:' "I am so fortunate that God has blessed me with this experience," she describes. "I wouldn't trade my experience here for anything." She also points out that she is grateful for meeting the girls on her team and forming friend- ships that she says will last forever. At Liberty University Hymers is enrolled in a four-year Crimi- nal Justice program. Upon grad- uation she plans on returning to Huron County, finding a job in law enforcement and playing hockey non -competitively. ATTENTION ADVERTISERS!
