passed a resolution protesting against
the School Act of last session fixing the
amount of salary to bo paid teachers on
the basis of assessed value, and depriv-

A case was trietdaat Toronto last week
which is of interest to every person who
travels. A contractor named Donovan
suet. the proprietors of a New Liskeard
Hotel for the return of $794 he had left
with the bell boy for safe keeping. The
bell boy decamped and a suit was the re-
sult. The judge decided that hotel keep-
ers are not liable for money voluntarily
left with hotel boys although they are
liable if money is stolen from the clothes
or rooms of guests. Chief Justice Mered-
ith tried the case.

In the departure from this life of the
late Jacob Diehl, of the 5th. oonoession
of Stanley Tp., on Friday, Deo, 7th, au
old and much respected pioneer has gone
at the ripe age of 85 years and 9 months.
He was born in Bavaria, Germany, in
the year 1821 and left his fatherland •for
Boston, U. 5 , at 24 years of age, being
six weeks crossing the Atlantic; six years
later he left for Canada and settled in
Huron Co. en the farm on which he has
lived for 55 years. Hero he hewed for
himself a home out of the forest wilds.
In the year 1853 he married Isabella Rice,
of Perth County,who predeceased him 29
years ago. He had ten ohildr en, seven
sons and three daughters.
