The Huron Expositor, 1980-12-18, Page 41On the first or 'second
week -end in Decelnber of
erieh year we celebrate our
Copper F4tnily Christmas
Get-together, The Coopers of
Huron County, Ontario, '
approximately 50 in all
symbolize the spirit of
Christmas, They have
celebrated for the last 40 odd
Christmases together to talk,
feast and play games.
At first we came together.
at Dad Cooper's house,, with
Dad furnishing, the Turkey
and everyone ,bringing their
favorite dish. Later each ef
the members of the im-
mediate family of seven took
their turn opening their
home to the Coopers for an
eventrigi _of dinner,_ excl_i_arjp
of fOUr boys and four girls,
felt strengly about family
togetherness, and set a
standard that still
spurs the
family on, He passed away in
1960.
The second generation,
the oldest Cooper Son,
Morley, enjoys a mean game'
of Euchre. The only one to
venture outside of Ontario
was Olive, the oldest girl,
who followed her husband -
to -be to Miehigan after he
secured a position for her in
the State Capital in Lansing.
Next on the family tree
comes Grace, the namesake
of her mother, the late Grace
McGregor Cooper, now
living in Kippen. And then
there's Duncan, named for
T
the centennial farm cif our
birth , in the Cpoper name,
Lloyd was taken' from us in
1928, LaSt, but by no means
least, is Doreen, lovingly
called "Deeny" 'now also
Jiving near Brucefield.
An interesting detail about
his family: There is no trace
of what we'll call
"in -law -ism". The Gung-ho
Cooper spirit is instilled in
everyone. Even one of the
little grand nephews living
some distance away said he
wouldn't give up the Cooper
Christmas for a Scout Camp -
out or anything else.
With 350 miles from
Oshawa, Ontario to
Flushing, Michigan
separating the families at the
of gifts and games of cards ,—his-scOttish-grandfather;-th two—farthest- —points this'
etc. all enjoying each other,
Tbe cast of characters
spreads over four
generations. The tradition of
their Christmas began with
Robert Cooper, or "Dad
Cooper" who, left alone at
the age of 42 to raise a family
late Duncan McGregor, Christmas get-together gives
known as "Dunc." and living them a chance to catch up -on
near Kippen. Next is their changing lives.
Beatrice, nicknamed "Beat" In the past 20 years the
a stalwart resident of Bruce- family has. eut-grown the
field. Then Jack, the homes so that we have had to
youngest son living, who gather at the Church Parlor
with his two sons still keep where most attended Sunday
School as children and •later
in the Huron Centennial
•School auditorium where
members of the United
Church Winnen of Kippen
cater with a 'delicious turkey
dinner and all the trimmings.

The sleigh bells are just e ringing
Choirs are having fun singing
Decorating the Christmas tree
Christmas time makes me filled with glee.

He'll fill the stockings one by one cilv4s,

Snow is on the ground,
Christmas is all around
Sleigh bells ringing

Put up the Christmas tree,
Decorate it with love,
Hang the wreaths and bells

Do you know what
Christmas is all out? Well I
dol One day P4ary and
Joseph were talkin
He said that Mary will have a
baby and they were going to
name him Jesus. The day
came December the 25th that
day Jesus Christ was born.
It wasn't just plain
December 25th it was a
special day. All the people in
Bethelern were in the motel
inn. So Mary had Jesus in a
stable.
The ox and other animals
had to move. Mary laid
Jesus down in a manger and
an great big light 'shone
down on the new king and
now the whole world
celebrates December the
25th for our new king's
birthday,
Christmas is
for children,

And with it some love
On Christmas eve
All is a sleep
Santa comes down the chimney
And you sneak a peek
Bump, bump, bump
Down he, comes'
You can hear reindeer
Prancing on the roof top
Under the Christmas tree
He unloads his presents
Oh what a sight
